Freeridecamp La Grave with Stefan Neuhauser

Spectacular descents and high mountain ambience in the French Alps

by PowderGuide 02/12/2017
Steep larch forests, couloirs and descents of up to 2,000 vertical meters make La Grave one of the top destinations for freeriders in the Alps. The future of the ski resort is uncertain - 2017 may be the last winter in which the freeride Mecca still exists in its current form. Long-time PG and mountain guide Stefan Neuhauser is offering a freeride camp in spring, where you can get to know La Grave in its original state.

What can you expect at the camp?

The aim of this event is not to ski the most extreme gullies of La Grave, but to get to know the classic runs of La Grave and the surrounding freeride areas, or to do one or two classic freeride tours in the area. Some of the classic couloirs can only be reached with rope assistance from the mountain guide. Depending on the snow conditions, we also ski in the areas of les Deux Alpes, Alpe d'Huez and Serre Chevalier.

In April, after the famous Derby de la Meije, peace returns to La Grave. We use this time to ride the area with just a few other riders, just like in the early days. Whether La Grave will reopen in the next winter season or whether the area will close for good is still written in the stars. So our trip has a bit of an end-of-season character and is a kind of farewell to the old cable car, which started directly from La Grave

Our hotel is close to the cable car station and has an excellent French menu ready for us in the evening. Information about the hotel at: www.hotel-edelweiss.com

Participants: 5 to 7 people per guide
Services: 6 days half board in a 2-3 bed room or 6 days apartment in the Hotel Edelweiss, 5 days of skiing, guided tour by a state-certified mountain and ski guide, rental equipment (shovel, probe, VS, rope harness on request)
Date: 09.-?15.4.2017
Price: 2-3 bed room (subject to availability) with half board at Hotel Edelweiss Euro 1090,-
Apartment at Hotel Edelweiss with self-catering Euro 920,- (per apartment).
Necessary equipment: rope harness, helmet, freeride skis, VS device, shovel and probe. The freeride skis should not be too wide in spring, as the lower areas are often well-worn moguls or gullies in which the skis must have some grip in order to ski the runs safely down to the valley.
