Which is safer? Helmet or bobble hat?
Who hasn't heard the following joke? In Austria, the helmet requirement has been abolished. Now everyone has to wear bobble hats. The reason: In an empirical test, a helmet was first dropped from a high tower, then a bobble hat. The helmet was broken, the bobble hat was still intact. Admittedly, the joke can be applied to all nations and it is also not clear whether more freeriders wear helmets in Austria than elsewhere. But a bit of schadenfreude on the side is allowed.
Back to the topic: modern helmets would probably also lose this empirical test against the bobble hat! Although they will probably soon be so light that they will no longer break on impact. When I wore the Symbol helmet for the first time two years ago, I was amazed to discover that you hardly notice it any more. Admittedly, my old helmet was a bit older and no longer up to date in terms of weight, but I was pleasantly surprised at how light the helmet was. Of course, the helmet also has to fit the shape of my head well - apparently I have a Scott helmet model head, because it fits perfectly, is comfortable to wear and ventilates very well.
