Ascent
From the mountain station of the summit lift, which can be reached not only from Auffach but also from Inneralpbach thanks to the new gondola, you first ski a short distance south on the piste to a saddle. Put on your skins at the reservoir and start the ascent. After just a few minutes you reach the summit of the Gern (1,902 m). From there, the route descends again slightly, following the ridge to the south-east and reaching another elevation before descending again briefly and finally climbing to the summit of Joel (1,964 m).
Descent
There are several options for the descent: First, you have to decide whether you want to descend into Alpbachtal or to Auffach. In the first case, there are several options for southwest-facing descents, e.g. via the Luegeralm. In the valley, the route is then flat all the way to Inneralpbach.
There are also several ways to get to Auffach: typically, you first ski from the summit over a ridge to the east before heading north and then following a forest track to the northeast towards the valley. Normally you follow a forest path from around 1,300 m above sea level. You cross the Aschbach several times and finally reach the road, which you follow shortly after Auffach.
