Snow condition
Total snow cover at about 1500 m now over 1 meter. Starting at 1200 at the parking lot of Grands Montets there is about 60cm. Descents in the flat forest are now possible, but I wouldn't dare attempt anything bigger than "just getting through". Most of the snow is on the slopes, which are still closed and not leveled.
Snow quality
Much easier than yesterday. It's colder now and the stuff is really fun. Now you still need enough steep slopes without forest where the avalanche situation is not too tense. Unfortunately, these are few and far between in the area at the moment. But you can get some really good turns if you simply hike on and off the slopes in the ski area. It's also a bit fluffier now and not so soggy. But it's not Champaign Powder yet - there's still some room for improvement.
Risks
Wind intensity: No Wind (0 km/h)
No dangers on the slopes where we were out and about. Above 2000m and above the tree line, the poor visibility and avalanche danger have probably meant that hardly anyone has been out and about for days and can report. However, I suspect that the avalanche situation should not be underestimated due to the critical amount of fresh snow. The Col des Montets towards Switzerland was closed today.
Overall impression
Brilliant winter day with a landscape covered in deep snow. A few deep turns in the powder too. Unfortunately, you're too slow on the flat, but as soon as the whole thing has settled down here, nothing stands in the way of a perfect start to the season with the opening of the ski areas this weekend. Please note: Due to the construction site on the new Grands Montets cable car, the ascent from the valley station in Argentiere through the forest on the right is currently better than directly via the piste in the lower section. Otherwise you will get in the way of massive construction vehicles and cranes.
