Snow condition
We were out and about in the southern valleys of the Aosta Valley from December 16-19. In general: on the north side, from about 1800m there is enough snow for ascent and descent on skis. Whether it's 1800m or 2000m depends on the valley in question. In the Val de Rhemes (ski tours possible from 1800m), in the Val d'Arpy, at Colle San Carlo (also possible from 1800m) and in the Val Grisanche (only useful from approx. 2000m), two 3000m peaks were climbed at the opening of the season, which is not necessarily an everyday occurrence.
Snow quality
In front of the dump, hard as a board, partly piste-like, in very shady and wind-calm areas, still slightly capped old powder. This means that a certain amount of technical ability is quite helpful both on the ascent and the descent. I give 3 stars because of:- no stone contact and- sufficient amount of snow for touring.after the dump, i.e. from (19.12.) onwards, considerable amounts of fresh snow have fallen there. In Camprocher, for example, it is said to have been well over 50cm.
Risks
The snow cover was icy or capped before the dump. The fresh snow therefore does not bond, or only very slowly. In addition, there are quite considerable wind loads. During the dump, the Lawi in Piedmont issued a level 4 for eastern Liguria and the Monte Viso area. Up to 2m of snow is said to have fallen there. Much less in the Aosta Valley, but it is still level 2 in the north-western part and level 3 in the south-eastern area.
Overall impression
Very rewarding. You can go ski touring there. Ascent and descent possible from the parking lot. The fresh snow has not significantly changed the initial situation. However, the increased risk of avalanches must be taken into account. A trip to the Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Queyras, Ubaye or Argentiere is definitely worthwhile, especially if you compare it with the current situation in the Northern Alps.
