downdays Photobook 2014

The time has come! The ninth freeski journal from downdays has seen the light of day: and this time it's a... photobook. It's old hat that some pictures say more than many words. But sometimes the old hats fit too. The downdays crew around Chief Klaus Polzer has put together an entertaining mix of mega photos, galleries, photofolios and scene insides. Big and lesser-known photographers from the freeski scene show and explain their very special shots from the past year. The article on Jeremy Bernard's Couleurs project shows how the boundaries between skiing and art are becoming blurred: Together with the Falquet brothers, he painted the powder. With food coloring. The result is impressive artistic powder pictures made of colored snow, which show less the skiing action and more the snow structures and the dynamics of the moving snow masses.
The analog documentation of a backcountry hut trip in Vorarlberg in black and white is not quite as convincing. To me, the photos look too pixelated and dizzy and since we only had analog photo material in our first books, I know that it doesn't have to be that way. The loud retro rapture fits in quite well with the enormously pixelated retro experience. But one less round on the emo scale would have done the report good. But that's a matter of taste. But you can always complain, it's hard to do better! Anyone interested in ski and mountain photography should enjoy the photo edition. The background information on the images and photographers makes the visually impressive and elaborately designed journal not only worth seeing, but also worth reading. The new edition of the Downdays Photobook is 130 pages thick and costs 7.80 euros and is available directly from the Downdays store as well as from many magazine and station booksellers.
