Tour stop at Pic Des Les Planes

by Tobias Huber • 02/12/2023
The first two stops of the FWT have already been completed and although the snow conditions were difficult, the action was impressive. In Andorra, the race was held on the Pic Des Les Planes, in the same face as the 2022 stop. This terrain offers many options for line choice, starting with a steep and technical section and then offering countless small to medium-sized obstacles, mostly characterized by flat landings.

There were relatively few crashes overall and the athletes concentrated on achieving a good result to increase their chances of qualifying for the final two tour stops.
Here is a highlights clip of all the categories.

Women snowboarders

The risk minimization strategy was particularly evident in the women snowboarders' field. Only very clean runs were presented here. Athletes who, in addition to a fluid riding technique and safe landings from small cliffs, also included additional elements such as a faster and safer ride in the upper, technically demanding area, were able to place themselves ahead of the others in the ranking. Katie Anderson won by taking a few more jumps after the technical section.

Snowboarders

The snowboarders took the risk of falling a little more often. This resulted in spectacular transfers, tricks and doubles. Jonathan Penfield had his strong run with a clean triple and Ludivic Guillot-Diat found a cliff for a backflip. Only Cody Bramwell misjudged his attempt to double a cliff and Camille Armand was unable to stand his backflip attempt.

Women skiers

Justine Dufour-Lapointe won with a strong line ahead of Molly Armanino and Elisabeth Gerritzen. A former World Cup skier and Olympic champion on the moguls, Dufour-Lapointe (FWT podcast) used her late start number to change her line at short notice to set herself apart from the other skiers. Molly Armanino mastered the first, steep and challenging passage at high speed and Elisabeth Gerritzen completed her run with a fast double.

Skiers

Valentin Rainer took victory in the skiers' competition. With two backflips and two 360s, he made sure there were enough tricks on show for a typical FWT winning run. He dedicated his line to a friend who had recently died in an avalanche accident. Just behind Valentin was Ross Tester, also with a 360, a backflip and another 360. Maxime Chabloz' run was characterized by a backslapper at the beginning. He made up the points he lost as a result with a cork 720 and a double backflip to finish in third place.

Craig Murray and Max Palm unfortunately ended their strong runs with a crash shortly before the finish. Manu Barnard showed excellent skiing at both stops, but was unable to complete his run this time. Another highlight among the skiers was the run of the newly crowned Junior World Champion Marcus Guguen, who struggled briefly with his goggle on his 720, but then took it off his head and performed a spectacular backflip.

You can see the overall rankings here. The third stop will be held in Kicking Horse from February 17-22!
