Gear of the Week | Atomic Four AMID Helmet

Lightweight, comfortable and reliable

The all-mountain helmet from Atomic impresses with style and comfort.

I've now been using the all-mountain helmet for almost a season in all weathers and am thoroughly satisfied. The Four AMID has mostly accompanied me on my tours. I also have a second helmet, which looks more robust and is too heavy and bulky for ski touring.

The Four AMID , on the other hand, is nice and light and can be easily stowed away in the helmet net, thanks to its non-rigid ear pads. At the same time, it feels like a real helmet that can withstand a lot in an emergency. I think that a helmet that you lug up the mountain (which I always do, by the way) should also fulfill its purpose when you need it. Atomic relies on its own "Atomic Multi-directional Impact Technology", which, according to the Atomic website, guarantees 40% more impact protection than the industry standard. I trust in it 😉

The Full Cap inner lining of the Four AMID is removable - a plus point for anyone who prefers to wear a beanie under their helmet or simply wants to wash the inner lining from time to time. Underneath is the so-called Hole Core, an additional crumple zone in the helmet that provides greater shock absorption even when the inner lining is not in use. The Four AMID has a buckle fastener. I'm familiar with higher quality fasteners from other brands, but I don't find this annoying. I can still put it on and take it off easily with my mittens.

In general, the helmet fits well and doesn't wobble on my head. This is probably thanks to the integrated 360 fit system. Incidentally, the helmet has 51-55cm circumference and is in the color sand.

The FOUR PRO L HD goggles developed together with the helmet are precisely tailored to the helmet and the unpopular Jarry Gap doesn't stand a chance here. The goggles are available in different tints. In my case, I tested the Red Lens, which is suitable for good weather conditions. But they also served their purpose on not-so-sunny days. The Four Pro L Hd Photo Lens is now available for this purpose; I can't test it yet, but I'm very excited about the experience with photochromic lenses!

All in all, the Four AMID is a solid, well-balanced all-mountain helmet - especially considering the price-performance ratio (150 euros). Of course, there are more robust models on the market, but these are usually significantly more expensive and often noticeably more cumbersome. The ventilation works, the ears stay warm, it is lightweight and space-saving for tours and at the same time offers good protection in an emergency. For me, however, style always counts alongside safety - and the helmet has proven itself in both respects.
