Gear of the week | Pomoca Free Pro 2.0 ski skins

Show your colours....

Ski skins usually last me more or less one season. Not that they are no longer usable after that, but the adhesive property in particular forces me to either apply new adhesive or invest in a new skin.

As applying new glue, or rather removing the old glue, would have been too time-consuming for me this time, I looked around for new skins. I found what I was looking for with our partner POMOCA. I had no previous experience with skins from the Swiss manufacturer. The right skin was quickly found and, thanks to the good filter function, quickly selected and on my desk. When I unpacked it, I was already looking forward to my first ski tours, coupled with a pleasant smell of powder. The reason for the pleasant smell and the associated confirmation of the inner feeling of joy was a small scented sachet labelled "smell the fresh pow". Indeed, somehow it smelled like my bobble hat after a day of fun in deep powder, only better. Ok, I admit that's not a decisive factor for an adhesive skin, but it's a good and fragrant start.

I immediately noticed that I didn't have to attach the end hooks myself. That can be tedious and takes extra time. The attachment to the skin is also very good, as I have experienced less solid attachments that can sometimes tear out. The front brackets fitted perfectly straight away and are well stitched to the skin. The trimming knife has a large handle and does the best job I have ever experienced with trimming skins. It glides through the fur precisely, smoothly and easily and cuts it without fraying. This step can be very tedious or time-consuming. This time not! If you have never cut a skin before, you will need to concentrate a little, but the error rate is really low. I wouldn't put it past anyone who can open a beer can. And that's it. Just adjust the end hook to the length of the ski and you're ready to go. In addition to the knife and the scented bag, I also had a goggle cleaning cloth, a buff, an additional front bar and a skin bag. What more could you want? Except finally off, out and, above all, back under.

I've used the skin on around 20 tours, between 100 metres and 2,000 metres of elevation gain, and sometimes we've had to skin up three times during tours. The adhesive properties are great (no residue) and have not lost any of their properties so far, even with repeated skinning (the skin was stowed in the jacket). With "Ever Dry 3.0" POMOCA is taking a big step towards environmental protection. It is a climbing skin that does not contain any environmentally harmful perfluorocarbon (PFC). Every Dry 3.0 has been used in all Climb Pro Mohair skins since 2017.

As the winter has not exactly shone with consistently solid snow conditions, the skin has sometimes had to be moved through rough terrain or over stones. So far, it has survived this without any damage or loss of fur. I was sceptical about its robustness, as the skin seems rather thin to me, but so far I have no cause for concern. The small pack size is unusual for me, but of course I'm happy to accept this if the robustness is the same. In terms of gliding properties, I'm the wrong person to ask, as my skis and bindings are rather heavy, I simply don't notice any big differences and what counts for me is the descent. But yes, the skins glide well, hold solidly even in difficult snow conditions (which we have just enough of) and therefore do a good job.

Conclusion

Smells good, perfectly prepared (front bar, end hooks), quick to cut, sticks really well and is robust. For me, a perfect combination and a great skin. The colour is not usually my favourite, but at the moment I didn't want to be out and about without this refreshing splash of colour.
