Gear of the week | Pre-Cut skins by K2

These skins are probably immortal

by German Wehinger 12/19/2021
Climbing skins allow us to hike up the mountains on skis. For a carefree touring experience, the skins should offer glide and grip. Hybrid climbing skins made of mohair and nylon are robust, water-repellent and make it more difficult for studs to form. The skins from K2 combine precisely these properties and cannot be broken.

My personal favourite among the skins is the Pre-Cut from K2. The skins consist of 70% natural mohair fibre and 30% nylon. In addition to the glide and grip, I am particularly impressed by the ease with which they can be put on and taken off. It's really easy to do. What's great is that they fit perfectly on all models that have the skin grommet holes on the tip and tail. The Z-Clip attachment is a secure, self-centring attachment for the K2 models. I have been using my skin for a decade.

With regular care, these skins are very durable. I have been using my K2 skin for a decade, believe it or not! I have never had to replace the glue. I regularly treat the skin with care products, but this is primarily to prevent the formation of studs. I am really impressed by the longevity of the skins and also particularly appreciate the good handling. I never have to use a lot of force to take the skins off, and the skins hold well on the ski and do not slip.

Nowadays, K2 skins are produced by Pomoca. But I can't say for sure whether this was the case with my skins 10 years ago.
