Gear Review | PYUA Collector Jacket & Creek-Y Pants

Robust hardshell suit for use in deep powder

by Lorenzo Rieg • 03/18/2021
The relatively young but already well-established PYUA brand is not only worth a look because of the practicality of its garments, but also because of its strong focus on sustainability.

PYUA not only pays attention to the materials used (free from fluorocarbons and Teflon, as much recycled material as possible), but also to the durability of the products. Of course, functionality must not be neglected either. We have tested how the Collector Jacket and Creek-Y Pant fare here.

First impression

The outfit immediately makes a very robust and weatherproof impression. Durability and weather protection have clearly been prioritised here and a slightly heavier weight has been accepted as a result. The material is rather thick, and some areas, such as the back of the jacket, are also minimally lined with thin fleece. This is not so much a lining as a laminated, roughened material on the inside. The trousers are cut quite high and can be attached to the jacket for optimum weather protection. The jacket has two large Napoleon pockets, while the trousers have two equally spacious pockets on the front of the thighs.

Otherwise, the outfit naturally has all the necessary equipment and features, such as sleeve cuffs with thumb loops, neat Velcro fasteners for adjusting the waistband and sleeves, ventilation openings, ski pass pocket, waterproof zips, edge protection, taped seams, adjustable hood, and so on...

Testers and test conditions

I am 183cm tall and weigh just under 80kg. I tested both the jacket and trousers in size L. The jacket fits me very well and shouldn't be any bigger, but the trousers were almost a little tight in terms of width, especially at the high-cut waistband. They should definitely not be tighter.

I have been using the outfit for several months and have tested it in a wide range of weather and snow conditions both in the ski area and on ski tours.

Test report

The outfit wears well, but I miss the braces a little, or rather a sensible way of attaching them. The high-cut waistband can be easily adjusted in width with massive Velcro fasteners, but I have to tighten them quite a bit to prevent the trousers from slipping. I really like the fact that all the "moving parts" such as zips, Velcro fasteners, press studs, hooks and gaiters are very sturdy. They may weigh a few grams more, but the material is simply more durable. After all, winter sports clothing does not usually have to be disposed of because it is no longer leak-proof, but because a zip or similar has given up and is no longer worth repairing. By using durable materials and an appropriate design, PYUA also contributes to the most sustainable clothing possible.

Naturally, the Collector Jacket and Creek-Y Pant outfit can withstand even the most wintry weather. The material is wonderfully windproof and waterproof and even in the deepest powder conditions or strong storms, no snow gets into the jacket or trousers. I have to admit that I never actually combine jacket and trousers, simply because the high-cut waistband and the well-fitting snow skirt prevent snow from getting in anyway. I can also praise the hood, which fits well over my helmet, but is not so wide that it gets in the way without a helmet.

The pockets are easily accessible and practical, and the Napoleon pockets on the jacket are also very spacious. The pockets on the trousers are more suitable for flat items due to their cut. A mobile phone, for example, fits in well, but an avalanche transceiver will be a little tight. The ventilation options also work well, although it should also be noted that the combination is definitely one of the warmer hardshells due to the thicker material and the aforementioned additional layer laminated on in some places. This is of course great at low temperatures or in ski resorts, but on ski tours in normal weather I personally find the combination rather too warm. However, I'm also someone who sweats a lot on the ascent and prefer to wear as little as possible.

As I suspected, the Collector Jacket and Creek-Y Pant are very robust. Of course, after a few months here I can't yet offer any long-term experience, but the combination still looks like new and I'm sure it will stay that way for quite a while.

Conclusion

A great and robust outfit with super weather protection that you're sure to enjoy for a long time. Ideal for powder days or ski tours in low temperatures. Personally, I find it a little too warm and heavy for spring and multi-day tours.
