Gear reviews | Uvex JAKK+ helmet and JAKK TO goggle

The dream couple

by Patrick Fux • 03/02/2016
Over the past few weeks, I was able to put the coordinated set of the UVEX JAKK+ helmet and the UVEX JAKK TO goggle through their paces.

During the past few weeks, I was able to put the coordinated set of the UVEX JAKK+ helmet and the UVEX JAKK TO goggle through their paces.

Test conditions

Japan with everything the weather gods have to offer. From -18C to +10, from bright sunshine to stormy snowfalls and, as it can't be any other way this winter, rain, sleet and every other conceivable combination of weather elements.

Test report

After testing the UVEX Snowstrike VT last year and calling it the egg-laying wool-milk sow, I didn't want to test anything new at first. It was clear to me that there couldn't be a better goggle. Contrary to expectations, I was proved wrong. For me, the JAKK TO fulfills every wish you could have for a goggle. Whether it's miserable weather with poor visibility or a steel-blue sky with blazing sunshine, the goggle is always suitable. Even better than the much more expensive Snowstrike VT.

No need to change the goggle or even just the lenses, just a quick flick of the wrist like a Formula 1 driver and you have the fair-weather lens in your hand, in the cloth bag and off into your jacket pocket. Within 30 seconds or even less, you have switched to poor visibility, but when the sun comes out again, simply reach into your jacket pocket, put on the lens without taking off the goggle and the 4 magnets hold it in place.

The manufacturer promises fog-free skiing, which I can confirm. In 45 days of skiing, I have never experienced the goggle fogging up even a little, but I have to say that I hardly sweat and have therefore rarely had problems with other goggles. Helmet and goggle are not only a dream team visually, but also technically. The ventilation of the helmet is designed in such a way that additional air is drawn in through the goggle, which in turn should prevent fogging. When riding fast, you can sometimes feel the draught in the goggle, which is not always 100% pleasant at very low temperatures, so I wish there was a "slider" to reduce the air flow and thus spare my eyes from very cold draughts. At -18C my eyes almost froze over, at least that's how it felt.

The helmet is equipped with the new octo+ system which is supposed to provide a great fit. This definitely works as intended. However, if you don't like a slight pressure on your head, it can be a little uncomfortable, so it's best to test it briefly in a specialist store. Personally, I have removed the elastic band as, with a head circumference of 61 cm, I reach the limit of the largest helmet (L 59-62 cm). Also due to the good ventilation, it gets too cold in the helmet in cold weather with my needs and therefore I wear a thin cap underneath which is then tight but nice and warm.

I am and have always been a big fan of helmets that have sliders to regulate the air supply, which I wish I had with this helmet VERY much! At +10 degrees or on a short ascent it quickly gets too warm, and on a fast descent at -18C it quickly gets very cold.

As for the goggle, it should be noted that the 4 magnetic dots are noticeable from time to time during the first few days and sometimes irritate briefly, but this quickly subsides and soon you no longer notice them at all. In my opinion, the field of vision is hardly affected by this.

Conclusion

Despite the small negative comments mentioned, this is a dream pair. I would never want to give the goggle in particular away again and can highly recommend it.
