PowderGuide start of the 2021/22 season

New winter, new luck!

by PowderGuide 10/16/2021
It's that time of year again: the mountains are covered in snow, you slowly need a sweater and jacket in the valley again, the season and group ski passes justify the latest price increases, the first turns on the glaciers, PowderGuide starts the season. We're not quite in regular operation yet, but are gliding step by step towards winter as usual.

Early season on PG

Regular operation in the magazine section is expected to start in November with the familiar weekly features, depending on the weather. SnowFlurry, WeatherBlog, Snow of Tomorrow, Videos of the Week and, of course, PowderAlert are all back and ready to go. Until then, there will be irregular articles to get you in the mood for the season. Here and there in the magazine this year there will be support for the tried and tested from new authors. As always, we are very happy when PG readers become authors. So if you have any ideas, go ahead! You can reach us at editor(at)powderguide.com

The weather service with data from ZAMG will also run as usual. It will be switched on as soon as it is possible to ski outside the artificial snow slopes on the glacier. We will be happy to report on this (and the glacier pistes) in the ConditionsReport!

We have not let time pass unused during the summer months with regard to the ConditionsReport. In the coming season, there will again be some new features and adjustments: In addition to bug fixes, an update to the app and the integration of moving images - yes, you read that right! - it will be possible for all PG users to create their own CRs in future. We expect this to give us an even closer and more up-to-date picture of freeride and ski touring conditions in the Alps. More detailed information and a timeline of the upcoming changes will follow soon in a separate article!

For technical difficulties or questions about the ConditionsReporter app, please contact us as usual: app(at)powderguide.com, for general questions about the CR to: conditionsreporter(at)powderguide.com

Corona winter 2.0

As much as we're looking forward to the season, we can't completely ignore the tiresome corona issue. For many, buying a new season ticket is part of the pre-season ritual. This year, at least in Tyrol, you had to sign a form stating that you wouldn't complain if the government decided that only vaccinated people would be allowed to use a season ticket. Rumors of such plans have been circulating in the media for several weeks. In the glacier ski areas in Austria, masks are compulsory in the gondola, as gondolas are considered public transport. In restaurants and stores on the mountain, on the other hand, masks are not compulsory because restaurants and stores are not part of public transport. The so-called new normality therefore brings with it certain challenges, at best only in terms of "where do I need the mask now and where not?"

For PowderGuide, the bigger challenge is that the winter sports industry is unsettled due to the crisis and is only investing relatively cautiously in marketing: PowderGuide is financed by advertising. We sell advertising banners to our corporate partners. The companies get a presence on the best winter sports website in the world and we cover the running costs (mainly IT and personnel) with the income. As a small company, PowderGuide notices pretty quickly when a few advertising partners drop out. That's why we'll have to show a few non-specialist banners in the future to compensate for the loss of revenue.

The site is technically outdated and there are some updates to come, which of course have to be paid for. We are committed to keeping PowderGuide free for users and do not want to introduce any payment barriers. We are working on integrating a kind of donation button in the future if anyone would like to contribute a few euros towards software updates. We would of course be delighted about this and it would also ensure that we can maintain the quality and quantity of our content.

In addition, anyone who buys from the PG Shop is also helping us! Maybe you need new ski wraps? Maybe someone would love a hoody with a stylish PG logo or a decent water bottle? Or maybe you still need Christmas presents for friends and family? Take a look! Every product you buy helps to keep our humble project alive!

We're looking forward to the season with you!
