PowderAlert 10 2024/25 | Eastern Promises.

Finally lots of fresh snow in Austria!

03/28/2025 by Lars Oelmann
The Austrian national anthem describes this season well "Since early ancestral days borne the burden of a high mission, much-tested Austria. Much-tested Austria."

I guess Ullr has really taken this part of the Austrian national anthem to heart this season (and, as the oracle has noticed, a few times in the last winters) and really let his disciples starve in Felix Austria.

However, he takes care of their silent suffering and at least lets the eastern part of Sissi's empire feel his kindness at the end of the season. The oracle's crystal ball promises, contrary to the content of the film's title, which the oracle has borrowed from pop culture, a lot of good things and not just violence and Russian mafia.

Alert period and areas

The alert goes from Innsbruck to the Schneeberg, with the core being at Salzburgerland and eastwards.

The alert lasts until Tuesday morning.

Wind

Relatively restrained at altitude in the accumulation areas, so that powder should also be found further up despite stronger winds at high altitudes.

The largest amounts are therefore likely to be found in the STAU areas and the foothills of the Alps and less on the main ridge.

Snowfall line

Lies between 1000 and 1500m during the event depending on the region and day. Full amounts from 1300m to 1600m with the lower values in the east. But there should also be quite a bit of fresh snow from 1000m.

The amounts

From Switzerland to the Arlberg under or around the alert between 15cm and 30cm of fresh snow. From about Innsbruck to eastern North Tyrol 30-50cm, with the higher numbers towards the east. However, the forecast balls see the border quite sharply but not clearly where. It is therefore possible that there will be 20cm more around Innsbruck.

In a tiny (10-20km (?) wide) transitional area there will be 50-70cm. Where this will be is still unclear.

From the Salzburgerland far to the east, 70-100cm will arrive and in Stau areas such as the Salzkammergut it could well be 120cm. As the model orography tends to underestimate the height (and therefore the Stau) of the mountains in the east, I wouldn't rule out a few more cm. Not so in the west, though.

Where should I go?

The following passage does not make much sense in English since it’s a play on typcial Austrian words. Please forgive the oracle ;)

On Saturday, you can order some whipped cream on your cake and a Seidel from the bus driver at the tobacconist and leave the day to the Piefkes.

Sunday should be ok in terms of fresh snow, but I don't think there are any usable trees left? If there are, then go there, otherwise be careful on the alpine meadows. On Monday you should be able to have fun in the sparse forest or meadows.

Tuesday should clear up in the afternoon, but possibly not in the east. Wednesday, however, should be sunny everywhere and then significantly warmer in the east as well.

Medium-term

After that, it will probably remain dry and warm for an indefinite period. It could therefore be another testing time for Austria and the rest of the Alps. And the end of the season is slowly and inexorably approaching.

Powder to the people who say "leiwand"!
