PowderAlert 5 2025 /26 | Captain, there she blows!

"Dump backboard ahead!", there's snow again in the Northwest Alps.

01/07/2026
Lars Oelmann
For weeks, keen freeriders have been wandering through the vastness of the Alps in search of powder, like whalers on the ocean in search of lantern oil or pirates in search of bounty. For a long time, there was nothing in sight. But now, finally we can hear: "There she blows, dump backboard ahead!" and there's snow again in the north-western Alps.

And that is sorely needed, because we are back in early November on the snow side - or still are in some corners.

Like Captain Ahab, the freerider standsbehind the wheel of his winter-tyred vehicle, the booster strap strapped tight and the steering wheel pointed towards the middle of the road. And the buddy riding shot gun in the “road boat” calls out "there he dumps" as he gazes at the powder on the branches of the trees at the side of the road.

The freerider has been chasing the monster dump, his white whale, all his life. But when he finally catches it, what does he do?

Uh... ride powder, of course. Does he at least feel an inner emptiness when he reaches his destiny? Nope. After all, we're not philosophical literary critics here, we're powderhounds. Our life is simple. If it snows, we ride through it. If it snows a lot, we'll ride through it and go “woohoo” once or twice.

And to be honest, it's more of a normal whale than Moby Dick that we get here from Ullr, but after eight weeks of drought we're grateful for everything.

Alarm period and areas

The alert runs from Thursday until midday on Sunday, although it ends in the west on Sunday morning. The alert area extends from the Hautes Alpes in France to the Arlberg due to the west to north-westerly flow, but the core lies in the west from the Lower Valais to the Hautes Alpes.

Wind

Strong storm at first but "only" stormy towards Saturday and Sunday. So full amounts deep into the French main ridge and into Valais. However, great danger further up due to huge drifts on a mostly weak snowpack.

Snow line

Difficult. It will rise rapidly on Thursday in France and the western Prealps, and will rise to 1400-1700m in the short term, the more open and further south the higher. In the direction of eastern Switzerland and Arlberg it will remain significantly lower and will tend to stop at 900-1200m and in the inner Alps, e.g. in Valais, it may remain below 1000m. From Friday evening it will go all the way down again and there will be powder topping at all altitudes. Full amounts from 1800m in the west and 1400m in the east.

The amounts

From the Arlberg to central Switzerland there will be around 40-70cm, although in the last forecast for eastern Switzerland and the Arlberg things have changed for the better, as it used to look worse.

From the Bernese Oberland to the Valais, 60-80cm and in the core from the Lower Valais to the Hautes Alpes, 70-100cm of snow. I can imagine 120cm in stau areas, because the amounts are robust and the stau is quite decent.

Where should I go?

You can skipThursday, as the precipitation only intensifies in the afternoon. Unless you're really, really desperate, bored and have rock skis. Friday should be quite good in more open areas and on alpine meadows in the core, but remember: in many places there was virtually no snow below tree line. Even on northern expos.

On Saturday, the forest should also be possible here and there in the core. In the west, it will probably clear on Sunday and from central Switzerland eastwards, this will be the day of days, as the stau here will theoretically only become intense on Saturday.

Medium term

Monday and Tuesday there will probably be a little extra, but it is unclear whether it will be alarm-worthy.

After that it will probably clear up briefly, but it's not clear whether it will get warmer, stay cool or even snow more. Sorry, the crystal ball is very fuzzy here from day five onwards, quite the opposite of the other powder populism websites.
