PowderAlert 6 2025 /26 | The little Alerty

Jumped as a tiger, landed as a bedside rug. There is much less snow coming than was hyped days ago.

Lars Oelmann
A few days ago, there were reports on social media (not from us!) that a new, large südstau was coming. But as is the case with Ullr, Italian lows and precipitation forecasts beyond 72 hours, that was probably symbolic for social media. More hype than substance.

Ullr and his exotic, southern beauty called Italy Low decided otherwise and we're probably just getting a little dump in a tiny area.

In a department store, you'd hear the announcement now: "The little genoa low is looking for its mother. It's waiting at the checkout in southern Piedmont and can be picked up".

And that justifies the overuse of the diminutive. So let's celebrate the Alertlein here, the Alertle of the Swabians or the Alärtli of the Swiss, because like small children it's quite cute, but you shouldn't place great hope in it saving the world or the season.

This is especially true as it is almost only brings snow in southern Piedmont, the region that has been doing quite well since Christmas and is also the only (?) region in the Alps not to have an old snow problem. Apart from the regions that have no problem at all because there is no snow. I don't know what's sadder: little snow, which you can hardly ski if you value your life, or virtually no snow at all.

Alert period and areas

The alert goes from the Maritime Alps to the Simplon and the core from the Turin Alps to the Maritime Alps. Elsewhere you won’t get anything or cosmetics.

The alert lasts until late Monday evening.

Wind

The tiny breezy is only blowing a little bit, as befits our alarm motto, and there is also powder further up. So more in the stau and on the small foothills than on the mighty high main ridge.

Snow line

Initially between 1200 and 1600m with the higher values further north and lower towards the Turin Alps and southern Piedmont. Towards Monday it will drop a little and should then be around 1000m in the north and even lower towards the south. So powder topping everywhere.

Full amounts from 1400-1800m.

The amounts

From the Simplon to the south-east side of the Gran Paradiso and Aosta we're just crawling around the alarm limit with 30-40cm.

From the Turin Alps to the Italian Maritime Alps 40-60cm and with a bit of luck possibly 10cm more in some stauhole. However, as the whole thing is fluffing along very tentatively, I'm expecting more surprises on the downside, as the little alarm has become rather smaller and weaker in the last crystal ball observations.

Where should I go?

You can stay at home on Saturday, it's only just snowing a bit. Sunday you might be able to ski in the core in more open areas below the tree line, because there's a base in the south and Monday could be quite fine below the tree line if you find places without tracks from the previous days. From Tuesday it will be sunny and you can go higher in the very south (not towards Simplon, Sestrierre or Aosta!) without persitent deep layer worries.

Medium term

From Tuesday it will be sunny and cold. Good touring weather, so it should stay good there in the south.

Chli Powderli to the people!

Your tiny oracle
