Ullr's run in the south - The first wave

by Lars Oelmann • 01/15/2014
When you're on a roll, why stop, thinks Ullr and sends several dumps from the southwest towards the Alps. What does that mean? It snows again exactly where there is already a lot of snow and the north gets nothing or at least virtually nothing in the west of Switzerland. The first wave starts tonight (Thursday) and ends Friday night. The second wave starts on Saturday afternoon and lasts until Tuesday.

How far down will it go? In the south, Ullr has an understanding with his disciples and snow is falling to below 1000 m. In the west and southwest of France, on the other hand, i.e. generally in the areas on the edge of the mountains and not towards the Po Valley, it can rain up to 1600 m. The cold air cushion in the southern Alps of Italy and Switzerland, on the other hand, is much more solid here and protected from the SW flow. The amounts of the first wave are again divided into many subzones: 1. let's start in the far southwest with the Jüngér d'Ullr. In the Maritime Alps up to the Massif d'Ecrin and the Hautes Alpes there will be 25-70 cm by Saturday, with 50-70 cm only in the very south towards the Mediterranean. 2. then there is a zone from the Isere department to northern Switzerland with 10-20 cm, so not really worthy of alarm. In the Jura, it could even reach 40 cm if the snow line drops below 1400. It is uncertain whether the Jura zone could possibly touch the Aravis or Chablais in the westernmost part of the Alps. 3) The rest of the northern Alps as far as eastern Austria will follow with nothing or nothing at all, as there will be 0-10 cm or only Föhn. 4. in the area south of the main ridge, a zone extends in the west from the Aosta Valley to western Ticino, where it could be 20-35 cm. Supposedly the models in the Monte Rosa area have more, but I can't imagine that with the flow and the current conditions. From eastern Ticino via the Adamello, Upper Engadine etc., a zone with 25-50 cm follows, which merges seamlessly into a zone in the east towards the Dolomites and above all Veneto/Slovenia again, where it could be 35-70 cm.

And that's just the first wave, because after 24 hours of calm, it starts again on Saturday night in the same areas. But more on that on Saturday in alert number 8. You see Ullr and its allies, the Rosby waves and large-scale weather systems, which incidentally make for a much worse winter in the western US, have set their sights on powder in the south. So: be flexible. Praise Ullr. Go powder skiing. So until Saturday: same spot, same wave (forgive the cheesy 80s radio DJ) Powder to the People!Your Oracle
