Snow Safety Days in Penzberg and on the Zugspitze

Sport Conrad takes us on a safety course!

by Sebastian Müller 12/10/2024
Sport Conrad is a partner of PowderGuide and has almost everything we would still need in our equipment cupboard. But Sport Conrad also cares about safety and invites us to the Snow Safety Days. On Friday in Penzberg, you can inspect new avalanche safety equipment with advice and in the evening, experts will give talks on tour preparation, risk management and weather forecasts. On Saturday, we'll then head up to the Zugspitze with mountain guides to put theory into practice.

Sport Conrad can make almost all our equipment wishes come true, and all with the best advice and in a relaxed atmosphere on site or in the online shop. The shop has a long tradition and has been serving the freeride segment for a long time. They once catered for me too, but I'll leave that for last. Here are the abridged facts about the Snow Safety Days. You can find all the detailed information about the Snow Safety Days here.

Snow Safety Days Freitag 13.12.2024

The Snow Safety Days start on Friday in the Penzberg shop from 4 pm with an avalanche transceiver fair: The brands Ortovox, Black Diamond, Pieps, Mammut, Scott and Arva will be on hand to give you extensive advice on the latest avalanche transceivers. Cool competitions with avalanche transceiver products are also waiting for you and when you buy an avalanche transceiver product, you get the Sport Conrad for free!

Experts will be giving talks in the Tech Talks starting at 19:30:

  • 19.35 - 20.05 Tech Talk 1: Tour preparation, packing list, first aid and equipment by mountain guide Andreas Tauser from the Oberstdorf Alpine School

  • 20.15 - 21.00 Tech Talk 2: Risk management the other way round by Jochen Reiser

  • 21.10 - 21.45 Tech Talk 3: Weather forecast for ski tourers by Dr Sebastian Müller/ Powderguide

I myself will talk about how the weather works in the Alps in winter and how it is forecast and also how Powderguide ICON weather came about and how best to use this and other services. I will be happy to share the talk later.

How it all began..

Around 2008, films like Anomaly and Claim and the Freeride World Tour with Aurelien Ducroz, Kaj Zackrisson and Xavier de Le Rue completely ignited my desire for freeriding, which I was already passionate about on piste skis at the time. I earned my first freeride equipment by working night shifts at the post office during the summer semester break. And then the time had come: with my father Otmar and my best friend Moritz, we went to Sport Conrad in Penzberg. There I bought a Dynastar Pro Rider with the Naxo NX21, North Face Combo, Hestra gloves, Vaude rucksack, avalanche transceiver set and woolly hat.

I went “all in” at the time and shortly afterwards started my “freeride training” at university sports. The first step was, of course, an avalanche course: at the Rotwandhaus on Spitzingsee, I learned the basics of avalanche search and made my first hairpin turns. After the intensive theory lessons, freeriding seemed almost irresponsible to me at first - but it didn't stop there. The next course was a ski mountaineering course - an excellent ordeal with these skis.

Many years later, these beloved pieces are still in use. Only the gloves didn't survive - I left them on an ICE train. If anyone has taken them: please let me know!
