WeatherBlog for freeriders 06/2012 – Wintry western weather
12/08/2011 • Lea HartlIt's been hard to believe recently, but the classic westerly weather pattern is one of the most common large-scale weather patterns in Europe. The current, long-awaited snowfall clearly shows why westerly weather is so important for winter in the Alps: reasonably widespread precipitation – and not too little of it. -

PowderAlert 05, Part 2: The second wave
12/06/2011 • Lars OelmannFirst of all, the verification (although there is still some to come this evening): With some stations over 70 cm where there was no snow before and many regions with more than 40 cm of fresh snow, from Valais to Glarnerland, the values of the last PowderAlert matched pretty well until today. Even in the east in the Arlberg corner, some stations like the Diedamskopf have stalked the 40 cm total snow depth and should make it by tonight. Further to the east, what I warned about has happened, as the upslope flow meant that there was not much there and the negative centimetres are making themselves felt. -

12/03/2011 • Lars OelmannAfter the beginning of October, the time has finally come again. Snow is falling. The weather situation has changed and instead of dry and southern flavors, we are now getting our fresh, juicy air masses from the west to northwest. After the beginning of October, the time has finally come again. Snow is falling. -

PowderAlert 02 – The powder squirrel feeds hard
10/18/2011 • Lars OelmannNow that the snow from two weeks ago, as predicted in the first alert, is hardly present below 2300 m, some more is coming: from France via the Vaud Alps to the Arlberg, around 20-30 cm will accumulate, as there is no real accumulation and the front is only moving across the Alps. -

12th Longboard Classic, 9-10.04.2011- The "Could be summer? edition
04/18/2011 • Muck Müller"Summer in the Stub'n": positive vibes and neon en masse! This year's Longboard Classic in Stuben/ Arlberg was the most summery edition yet: temperatures around 25 degrees, summer slush and ground avalanches in the Albona Face led to a new, shortened route through the Rauztobel. What sounds like a bad "backup plan" turned out to be a stylish Longboard Classic of a special kind! -

WeatherBlog for freeriders 18/2011 | Little accumulation on glaciers and onset of winter
04/14/2011 • Lea Hartl
Glaciology is a specialty of meteorology. Glaciologists go to "their" glaciers twice a year and dig holes in order to later determine the mass balance. To do this, they need helpers, usually students, who lend a hand with digging and carrying various pieces of equipment. -

Spring firn in Lech and Zürs, Arlberg
04/19/2010 • Martin HesseWhen the days get longer and warmer, but we still don't want to put our skis in the cellar, it's usually about finding a ski resort that offers runs in as many exposures as possible. And one of the areas that offers ideal terrain for this is Lech-Zürs on the Arlberg. Reason enough for us to head to the Arlberg in mid-April for a firn session, which at times even turned into a powder session. -

10th Longboardclassic | Stuben, Arlberg
04/22/2009 • Jan Sallawitz
You'd have to be a poet to put the 10th edition of the Longboard Classic into words. How can you describe an event where a good 440 riders simultaneously and harmoniously conquer an altitude difference of 1001m? Where the legends of our sport cruise edge to edge into the valley with lesser-known riders? Where an 8-year-old is honored on stage just as much as a 73-year-old? Where the organizer personally congratulates everyone who crosses the finish line and where every participant goes home not only with a gift, but above all with a big smile?! -

10th LBC in Stuben / Arlberg
04/22/2009 • Jan Sallawitz
The 80 women start first. The fastest is the Swiss Katrin Kellenberger (CH) ahead of Regina Lind (AT) and Heidi Gunesch (DE). Kati has already stood on the LBC podium several times and is super-happy to finally be on top at the 10th anniversary and take the title home to Zurich. After the ladies, it's the turn of the old-schoolers.
