South of the striking Birnhorn, you will find moderate touring terrain in the Leoganger Grasberge. In the Schwarzleo valley, a tour from the huts via the Kuhfeldhörndl to the Spielbergkar is a good option. In bad weather, the forest offers protection and visibility on the ascent.
Ascent
From the parking lot at Hütten, cross the bridge. Take a shortcut across the open field on the right heading north to the higher road. Cross this and at the farm initially across open meadows and later in the forest always on the ridge to the Sonnkogel. After a few meters downhill, continue along the ridge and on its north side in now more challenging terrain to the summit of the Kuhfeldhörndl. Beware of the steep north-facing gullies! The snow below the summit is often heavily blown in.
Descent
From the summit, head west towards Spielberghorn. In safe conditions, ski into the initially steep Spielbergkar and in the lower part over hilly meadow terrain (east side of the trench) to the Thomanalm. From there, take the road to the show mine. Continue on the often cleared path, initially on skis at the edge and later possibly a few meters on foot back to the parking lot.
Tip
In adverse weather conditions, a short ascent only to the elevation in front of the Sonnkogel and a descent along the ascent track over the flat terrain is recommended. Even with fresh snow, you should find safe conditions here.
In spring, if the snow conditions are poor, you can follow the signpost to Schaubergwerk by car and stop at a parking lot below. From there, ascend along the descent described above.
