In the remote Averstal valley, fantastic slopes await freeriders and ski tourers on a variety of ski tours. We present two rewarding variants of well-known tours, which often offer good snow thanks to the high altitude and shady exposure.
1. Wengahorn
Ascent
From Juf, cross the stream on a bridge near a small house and start the ascent with a view of the summit on the right-hand side of a prominent trench. On the ridge and along the ridge you reach the summit. The summit slope is often a little windswept. However, crampons are not necessary. A small rock below the summit is a good place for a snack.
During the ascent, you can take a look at the northern slope to the right of the ascent track at several points and survey the situation.
Descent
The descent along the ascent track is often rutted. Nevertheless, the ascent is worth it! (Please don't be put off by the associations evoked by the name of the mountain - the 90s and their music are fortunately history!)
To the west of the ascent track is a rarely used, wide and perfectly inclined north-facing slope ("In da Wenga"), which invites you to go full throttle at an altitude of approx. 400 meters. First you ski from the summit along the ascent track (keep left in the direction of travel) and cross briefly at an altitude of approx. 2,500 m in a westerly direction into the north-facing slope. In the lower section, the slope bends away into a trench. Before this, you should keep right in the direction of travel and cross back to the starting point. In some places you can also turn left into the ditch. From there, walk back to the road.
It is worthwhile to ski down to just before the trench and climb up a few meters (with skins) in the direction of the original ascent track. If you still have enough energy left in your legs, you can tackle the slope again.
Tips
The tour runs completely above the tree line. Good visibility is required for orientation.
The north-facing slope is over 35 degrees steep in places and requires safe conditions and a sensible choice of line when entering. You must also be aware of the terrain trap in the lower part (ditch!). If the conditions prove to be too tricky on the ascent, you can ski down along the (flatter) ascent track.
2. Juferhorn and Mugmol
Ascent
From Juf, ski flat into the valley along the Jufer Rhine. First you pass an imposing slope - the later destination. After the deep trench of the Mugmolbach stream, you start the actual ascent (with a view to the summit on the left side of the trench) to point 2490. From there, keep right to the ridge between Juferhorn (you can save yourself the trouble) and Schinetahörnern. You can have a wonderful snack on the ridge.
Descent
The descent along the ascent track is also beautiful, but in good conditions it is quickly tracked. A descent variant is also more rewarding here: first descend the steep slope below the ridge, keeping to the left in the direction of travel, and then follow the broad ridge towards point 2681 (do not go too far to the right or left into the steeply sloping slopes!) From this point, an evenly inclined north-east slope with approx. 500 meters of full-throttle terrain down to the valley floor awaits. This (actually obvious) variant is rarely skied.
