Videos of the week #8 2023/24 | Daydreaming

by Sebastian Müller • 01/26/2024
Winter will change, for the better or worse. Meteorology tries to predict these changes, but the VdW realise that things change and are embracing them, no matter what. And of course, we keep dreaming, night and day!

Daydream | Faction Skis | That's what VdW is all about

A film that shows Yann Rauris and Sam Anthamatten in the best Swiss powder and puts them in the best light with music. Please, watch it!

A dream of skiing at altitude, shrouded in clouds, in the land of the imaginary mountain, brought to life in illustration and film.

Yann and his van set out on a lifelong mission to search for the perfect powder day, as they become rarer. At a bend in a mountain road, he welcomes a character on board. This man, armed with his sketchbook and skis, brings the mountains to life with his artistic tools. From here, these two new friends navigate between dream and reality on ever more beautiful and aerial slopes. "Daydream" is a creative mountain film project blending animation from a wandering mind and film sequences shot on-location in Switzerland.

Jake Hopfinger and Parkin Costain have been obsessing over massive wall rides for years. Inspired by Dash Longe's wall ride in Tight Loose (2015), the boys set out last winter with one goal in mind: nail the perfect wall ride.

LEXICON

An inspiring short film that celebrates the universal language of skiing as a catalyst for human connection. Featuring men and women skiers from Norway, France, Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan, this story serves as a reminder that sometimes the most profound communication occurs when words are not needed at all. From bottomless pow turns in majestic Japanese forests to the high volcanic alpine of central Hokkaido, Lexicon reminds us of the transformative power of adventure, cultural exchange, and the bonds we can create when we embrace our shared passions and the inherent joy of connecting with people from different walks of life.

Dropping In - Len Jørgensen

We dropped in on Len Jørgensen at his place in Heggedal, outside Oslo, where he lives with his partner Amanda, daughter Livia and their dog, Ronja. We timed our arrival perfectly and were able to enjoy powsurfing and snowboarding in the woods, dig a banked slalom course for his friends, make and eat pizza, and get a tour of his home and yard. Lenny Powers is a true shred freak and it was a pleasure for us to get an insight into his daily life.

Ski tour: Gammerspitze - Jeneweinrinne - Brenner, Schmirntal valley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM370N87UO0

Attention: No ascent possible from 20.01. The Gammerspitze via the Jeneweinrinne is a racy ski tour that leads very directly upwards over approx. 1150 metres. The tour has always been done as a descent. I think it makes more sense to explore what you want to ski down beforehand on the ascent. There are only very few car parks - we had 2 without having to park in the woodpile - directly at the starting point. It is essential to find a car park where no locals are hindered. But then it starts, first up a very narrow forest track, then a much wider and flatter track. Overcome a steep pine slope and look for the best way to get up to the summit via hilly terrain that gets steeper and steeper towards the top. Be sure to watch out for avalanches and snow slabs, the tour may only be undertaken in safe conditions.

Note: Tour date 06.01.2024 - Tour was also still possible from 09.01 to approx. 14.01..

On a sacred mountain-teens Riki and Talon Pascal connect with their roots | Arc'teryx No Wasted Days

With the right guides, a little push, and buoyant optimism, two teenage brothers from the Líl̓wat Nation begin a journey to ski Ts̓zil - a sacred mountain on their territory.

REVENANT | Thomas Trifonitchev

Despite a low tide winter season in Europe, Thomas Trifonitchev also known as 'Coach Trifes' or 'Trifes' took full advantage of his scarce opportunities to get in front of the lens.

In his own words:

This part wasn't even planned to be honest. Only half way into the season I realised I'll be at three shootings as a guest and I might as well use them to create a piece - I don't get to shoot that often so I was very stoked about it. The goal was to underline my tall 6'4 and beefy-looking being with some creative tricks, proper grabs, and big landings. I'm hyped to showcase our LINE Chronic Collection in a true all-mountain fashion, ski anywhere kind of way, and carry the design of the series throughout the edit.

As I started to feel like people merely view me as a coach and not an active skier - I've chosen the title 'Revenant'. I hope you'll vibe with it and special thanks to LINE for inviting me to Utah and Dennis Ranalter for the inclusion in the Descendant Movie. Go watch it if you haven't already."

Nikolai Schirmer Took Me Skiing.

Last week we were able to meet up with @Nikolai_Schirmer & @kriskopa for a day of touring in St. Anton, Austria.

I have been a huge fan of Nikolai's & how he is able to showcase amazing skiing while telling interesting stories. Through watching Nikos videos I have been quite in “aww” of Krister & his ability to snowboard gnarly terrain with ease. So it was a blast linking up with them while they are filming for a new video project releasing this fall.

The day was absolutely amazing & we were able to ski so much good terrain, It is a real eye opener as to what is possible when you are out with the big dogs, Big thank you to Niko, Krister, & Vettlet for the wonderful day & for taking these two American Cowboy's out on a lovely day.

Brooklyn Bell | Low Pressure Podcast #250

Brooklyn Bell is an important person at the forefront of the movement responsible for raising awareness and building representation in not only skiing but also mountain biking and the greater outdoor industry.

This is a conversation I was grateful to be able to have because I haven't had many like this! I'm grateful to Brooklyn, someone from the BIPOC community, for being able to ask her about their experience in this world we all choose to recreate and participate in.
