WeatherBlog #2 2024/25 | Onset of winter

It is getting cold and snowy!

by Sebastian Müller 11/19/2024
A low pressure system from the Arctic hits the north coast of Germany, bringing gales, rain, thunder and lightning, but also snow and cold. The flow remains north-westerly and leads cold, moist air to the northern alps. With this first, cautious call of a winter onset, the PG WeatherBlog starts its weekly work. We are looking forward to put a snowy winter into words and graphics for you.

Weather situation

For weeks, the circulation in Europe was in an omega blocking position. With a dominant high pressure system over Central Europe, the Greek symbol can be recognised on weather maps and the lows rushing in from the Atlantic are deflected to the far north. But that's all water under the bridge now. The weather situation has destabilised and a low called "Quiteria" has free access to Central Europe. Behind its cold front, it is likely to become both thundery and frosty cold. Over the course of the week, the snow line will drop to below 500 metres in a persistent north-easterly flow, which is also likely to cause the low mountain ranges to get quite a bit of snow. The western Alps and the western part of the northern slopes of the Alps in particular will enjoy more abundant snowfall. If you take an optimistic view of the models, you should expect a powder alert!

Outlooks

It won't stay this wintry for long. All ensemble members see a rise in temperature again by the weekend. Enjoy the snow if you can! But the next one is sure to come.

COP 29 in Baku

The annual world climate conference is being held in Azerbaijan this year, not in the oil state of Qatar as it was two years ago. Natural gas, which is in high demand in Europe under the current political circumstances, is being drilled around Baku. Is the COP undermining its credibility by organising this prestigious event in states representing the fossil fuel age? The COP's thematic focus is on financing climate change mitigation and adaption, steering money from the historical emitters, industrialised countries, to countries particularly affected by climate change. In Solidarity for a Green World, under this motto, the energy industry, which is seen as both a contributor and a promise of salvation, is now to be more closely involved in investments. This raises the question for me. Does the COP or the global community actually have the necessary political, legal and technological means to combat climate change effectively? I fear not. The pressure to act is enormous, since CO2 emissions are still rising. The COP will take another week to at best deliver a final declaration.
