WeatherBlog 21 2024/25 | Best April weather

Intermediate high and northerly flows

04/02/2025 • by Sebastian Müller
Central european summertime has started and April has begun - and with it the familiar April weather, with spring and winter battling it out for the upper hand. After the surprisingly heavy snowfall on the northern slopes of the Alps, the weather calms down for the time being. However, a further outbreak of cold air and another northerly flow are to be expected.

Weather situation

As announced by the oracle in the last WeatherBlog, the northerly storm has indeed delivered some fresh snow, mainly on the east-northern slopes of the Alps. Most of it actually came down in Salzburgerland and Tyrol, as many euphoric ConditionsReports show. The snowfall gradually came to an end on Tuesday and clear conditions took over in the middle of the week: A high over the North Sea determines the weather pattern and it becomes warmer and sunnier. The crocuses and snowdrops will sprout in the valleys, if there is no fog hanging around, and at higher altitudes the touring conditions could be really worthwhile again.

Outlook

It seems like a DĂ©jĂ  vu. Towards the weekend, a similar northerly flow is looming. In contrast to last week, when the low pressure area moved from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea, this time there is a blocking high over the North Sea. This will result in a north-westerly flow and polar air will flow southwards along the back of the high pressure system and develop into a deep trough. A cold northerly flow towards the Alps, as we know and love it, and as fruit growers fear it. Let's hope that the blossoms of apricots, pears and the like will survive this without any damage and that the northerly flow will bring us good snow conditions once again. We'll keep an eye out and hope that the oracle reveals more soon.
