The PowderGuide Team | Part 3

The PowderGuide team wishes you a Merry Christmas!

by PowderGuide 12/24/2023
We wish you a Merry Christmas and lots of powder! Today we're introducing you to part three of the PowderGuide team: our long-standing tours, CR and PowderAlert People, as well as our brand new team members responsible for translation and the event calendar.

Name:                                    Lars Oelmann

Task area:                  The powder oracle that writes the alert

Since:                              2012/2013

What connects you to PG and what do you associate with PG?

I used to tinker with forecasts in the Freeskiers Forum in the distant past and then always went there myself to check the conditions. At some point, Lea asked me if I wanted to do it on PG. Other people watch football, I watch the models every 12 hours in winter. I actually follow my own alerts and am still surprised sometimes.

What excites, interests or fascinates you?

Deep powder....Then nothing for a long time....

I also enjoy surfing, climbing and listening to all kinds of guitar music.

Name:                                     Anselm Köhler

Task area:                   Snow prediction game, world of science

Since:                               2016

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

In the 2016 winter, Steffen spontaneously came to the Flüela Chalet and asked if I would like to test a splitboard. Of course, you can't miss out on something like that and so I was accepted into the PG Club. A few more test reports followed, especially regarding splitboarding with hard boots. Then there was the most important snow research conference in Innsbruck (ISSW) and together with Lea we tried to condense the world of science into generic articles - it was a lot of work, but hopefully there were also a few interested readers... Ultimately, the biggest constant in my PG activity is the snow prediction game.

PowderGuide is simply a great community, with good information on tour planning and exciting, and above all well-written, articles in the magazine. For me, the highlights are the PowderAlert, the weather blog and the condition reports.

What excites, interests or fascinates you?

Snow and mountains are my element, they are the main reasons why I moved to the Alps and enjoy my life here. Snow is also a central element in my professional life. I prefer to be out and about in the fresh snow away from the ski resorts, I don't really go up the mountain just to ski on the piste...  I find it absurd that there are only very, very few natural snow pistes left in Tyrol, and the standard piste is almost made of ice these days. Fortunately, if the snow isn't good, you can also climb in Tyrol in winter or quickly escape to warmer climates via the Brenner Pass. It is important to me to have as many of my leisure activities as possible in the immediate vicinity and to reach them almost exclusively by public transport. Ski tours and crossings with public transport in particular make it possible to go on tours that are less frequented - but require a certain amount of creativity when planning tours.

Field of activity:                   Cooperations

Since:                               09/2022

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

I've been a ConditionReporter at PowderGuide for almost 7 years. I joined through Alex, my former flatmate in Innsbruck, who was responsible for social media at PowderGuide for a few years. Last year they were looking for someone to work in the area of co-operations, and as I had enough free time thanks to my educational leave, I wanted to take the opportunity to get more involved in the PowderGuide project. I am mainly responsible for co-operations with tourism associations and ski resorts in Austria and Italy. I'm also in contact with other companies that might be suitable for partnerships, and in this context I visited the ISPO in Munich, among others. I also test equipment for PowderGuide and then share my impressions with the community as a test report.

What excites, interests or fascinates you?

I like to be out on the mountain all year round. Of course, my favourite thing to do is splitboard and when the snow conditions allow it, from September to July. Thanks to my role models Xavier de le Rue and Heini Holzer, I have developed a particular fondness for steep faces. With my camera with 30x optical zoom, I also spend a lot of time spotting lines and conditions

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

A passion for spending time on skis in winter. Sharing experiences with others and meeting new like-minded people.

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

I find climate & weather with all the related statistics, such as the development of glaciers worldwide, very exciting. In addition to winter sports, downhill biking in the summer is also very popular today!

Field of activity:                  Snowboards / Splitboards

Since:                              2012?

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

I associate PowderGuide with many happy moments in the mountains that have accumulated over the years. What could be better than sharing what you love to do with likeable and funny people? That's also the reason why I'm still on board alongside my family commitments.
I came to PowderGuide back then because I - like probably many others - read the PowderGuide avalanche book (the 'cooler Munter' translation) and had been intensively involved with both risk management and the development of splitboarding for years. In doing so, I realised that although PG had originally emerged from the snowboard sector, it was hardly represented in terms of editing and content. That's why it was and is my goal at PowderGuide to report on important developments in the snowboard touring sector in an informed and well-researched way. There are already enough pseudo-tests in the vastness of the internet.

What excites, interests or fascinates you?

I am a person who is inspired and fascinated by a wide variety of subjects and aspects. Be it bizarre everyday moments, impressive essays, good food or being out in nature.
Witnessing and observing my own children grow up and the minor and major changes that come with it is a daily source of joy (and sometimes madness)

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

What I have in common with PowderGuide is my love of snow and the mountains. I became aware of the website through the ConditionReports because it was always easy to find out where it was worth going and where not. I also liked PowderGuide's safety-orientated approach, which still left plenty of room for fun and adventure. I joined the team via translation and will translate the site into English so that even more people can benefit from the cool and interesting content. Sometimes I also get to write the odd article or meander through the stands at ISPO.

What excites, interests or fascinates you?

Discovering new things, learning new skills, acquiring new knowledge, seeing things from a different perspective. Doing everything a little differently.

What connects you to PowderGuide and what do you associate with PowderGuide?

Hi, I'm the newbie here. I associate PG with sharing my passion for snow and everything that goes with it. I've been living in Innsbruck for a few years now and try to start adventures on my doorstep as often as possible. I find it really interesting to always be up to date by posting exciting events and thus gaining access to new topics.

What excites, interests or fascinates you?

I am always fascinated by what nature has to offer if you just take a closer look and allow yourself to be inspired. Being deep in the powder is one of those moments when I feel at one with the elements. It impresses me how present I can be outdoors and what life lessons nature has quietly in store for me.
