Spaghetti strap tops, V-necks, slacklines between the trees, lovers in the park and full ice cream parlors. The unmistakable signs that summer is fast approaching. But wait! There was something? Yes, that's right. Late winter. Not even a week ago, it felt completely different. The weather forecasters were reporting 40 cm of fresh snow down to low levels. Snow chaos on the highway and almost saucer-thick flakes wanted to keep us from a powder session in the Montafon. But our hunger for fresh snow under the powder slabs was greater in the end.
Even though a disappointing 5-10 cm awaited us at the top, it continued to fluff up until the afternoon. Thanks to the widespread floating snow foundation and yet 25 cm of fresh snow by the end of the lift, it was enough to have to switch over to snap breathing a few times.
Even though spring has arrived in the mountains this week with increasingly long sunny spells, you shouldn't write off Mrs. Holle just yet. The snow cover is thicker than it has been all season at mid-altitude and the high sun promises long days. As long as the temperatures don't rise too high and you stay at the right altitude or take the daily warming into account when making your decision, nothing stands in the way of carefree and mostly low-competition freeriding. If you want to brave the omnipotence of the approaching summer once again, take note of the still widespread poor snow conditions - the avalanche risk and therefore also the number of accidents this winter are well above the long-term average throughout the Alps.http://winter.silvretta-montafon.at/
