WeatherBlog 20/2015
Lea Hartl • 04/08/2015Winter returned with a roar over the Easter holidays. Hurricane Niklas was followed by further disturbances embedded in a strong NW current and snow and cold down to the valleys. Easter Monday seemed more like a successful St. Stephen's Day. This impression was only disturbed by the occasional rumble of thunder. -

WeatherBlog 19/2015 | This and that
Lea Hartl • 03/25/2015We are currently under the influence of a Mediterranean low whose frontal southerly flow is causing foehn winds in the northern Alps. The low is now slowly ending its rather long stay over the Iberian Peninsula and moving eastwards. The Föhn should be over here by Thursday and the unusually rainy days in the Sahara(!) will also come to an end. The precipitation already present on the southern slopes of the Alps will spread to the north, where it will be supported by a cold front from the NW. -

WeatherBlog 18 2015 - Cyclone Pam
Lea Hartl • 03/18/2015Last Friday, tropical cyclone Pam brushed the island state of Vanuatu in the southwest Pacific. On average, Vanuatu is affected by two to three cyclones per year, with three to five causing severe damage per decade. -

WeatherBlog 17/2015 | A spring fairy tale
Lea Hartl • 03/11/2015Once upon a time, a high pressure bridge over Central Europe provided stable mountain weather for days on end. Unfortunately, the wind didn't really want to play along, so the avalanche situation remained tense in many places, and annoyingly on a sunny weekend with fresh snow ... -

Gear of the Week | Pieps i-Probe
Lea Hartl • 02/28/2015The i-Probe is a tension probe with a digital receiver built into the tip. There is an on/off button and the battery compartment (1x AA) on the handle. The receiver works according to the EN300718 standard, i.e. it detects 457 kHz transmitters. If you come within about 2 meters of such a transmitter, you will hear an acoustic signal (beep). From a distance of about half a meter, the beeping becomes a piercing continuous tone. -

WeatherBlog 14/2015 | Sun and stuff ...
Lea Hartl • 02/18/2015The current weather is a good opportunity to take a closer look at the sun and its radiation. As we know, it is not only responsible for sunburn and the general living conditions on our planet, but also does one or two things to the snow. -

WeatherBlog 13/2015 | January review and outlook
Lea Hartl • 02/11/2015January may have felt relatively wintry, but the statistics have no feelings. February, on the other hand, is currently spring-like in the mountains, while the lowlands are often bobbing along under a blanket of inversion-induced fog. -

WeatherBlog 12/2015 | Report on this year's Groundhogday
Lea Hartl • 02/04/2015The woodchuck (Marmota Monax), like the well-known alpine marmot (Marmota Marmota), belongs to the genus Marmota (Marmota), tribe Marmotini (true ground squirrels), family Sciuridae (squirrels), order Rodentia (rodents). In English, Marmota Monax is called a woodchuck, which has raised the important question since time immemorial: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
