The modern little freeride guide for Salzburgerland by Heiko Mandl is extremely chic and very trendy. 24 freeride routes from easy powder slopes to Dachstein classics are described in detail here, and those unfamiliar with the area will discover plenty of playgrounds for their next freeride days in Salzburgerland with the help of the freeride guide.
There are usually great photos for each of the descents and the map sections are clearly laid out and well chosen. So far, so great, you may smile at the hip language - or you may just like it.
Weak section on snow, avalanches and dangers
The author's claim that the book deals comprehensively with avalanche danger, freeride preparation and basic freeride knowledge is less successful. Here someone writes about things that he is (too) unfamiliar with, even if the practical freerider couldn't care less whether the processes in the snowpack are of a chemical or physical nature. Anyone who found the subject of chemistry as corrosive as I did, won't care much about such mistakes. It's a pity, however, that the freeride preparation à la Mandl is only of limited use and is often exhausted in general phrases, along the lines of "you should load your equipment into your car? For this, there are just two rating stars. Sorry!
