Impressive runs in the sunshine and the first title decision

by Pascal Schindler 03/19/2024
At the fourth stop of the Freeride World Tour, riders can expect the face of the Wildseeloder in difficult snow conditions. The expected 20 cm of fresh snow overnight turns into 1 cm and the slope is frozen, especially at lower altitudes, due to the previous period of warm weather. On the day of the competition, however, the sun shone brightly and spurred on all participants. Victor De Le Rue, once again in first place, secured the title in the men's snowboard category. Canadian Erin Sauve came out on top in the women's category. Frenchwoman Astrid Cheylus and New Zealander Ben Richards came first on skis.

The FWT is being held in Fieberbrunn for the 20th time, making it almost a classic. With a difference in altitude of 580 metres and an average gradient of 48°, the face of the Wildseeloder offers plenty of options for spectacular lines. Riders can choose between two starting points, one in the fall line above the Häusl Cliff and one directly at the top of the Wildseeloder. In contrast to the stops that have already taken place at the FWT24, the athletes will have two runs each at the two stops of the final, the best of which will be counted. After the forerunners had skied and described their impressions of the conditions, the competitors were flown up by helicopter.

Snowboard men

Timm Schröder from Germany secured third place. He starts his second run with a 360 above an intimidating cliff, followed by a butter 360 into the zone above the Häusl cliff, which he jumps without any problems. Two more 360's and a perfect backflip earned him 87.33 points. Liam Rivera also starts from the top of the Wildseloder and impresses with a 360 over the Häusl Cliff. After crashing on a backflip on his first run, he now manages it perfectly and takes silver with 89 points. Overall leader Victor De Le Rue was in second place after the first run, but moved up one on his second run. He jumped a 360 from the Häusl cliff into a landing on the side and scored 90.67 points with three additional 360s. He therefore added another victory to his three existing victories at the fourth stop of the tour and is already secured as the winner of the 2024 men's snowboard category.

Victor De Le Rue therefore retains the lead in the ranking. Timm Schröder follows in second place, ahead of Liam Rivera.

Ski ladies

The women's competition in both categories remains exciting and a neck-and-neck race. Manon Loschi, who crashed during her run in Georgia and therefore missed out on her likely first place, jumped into third place on the podium with a huge cliff drop and a perfectly landed backflip. The judges awarded her creative line 82 points. Hedvig Wessel from Norway showed a run with several big airs and a layout backflip. She scored 82.33 points, which gave her first place after the first run. However, the Frenchwoman Astrid Cheylus from La Clusaz was able to outdo her. She was one of the few riders to choose a line on the left-hand side of the slope and jumped the eagle cliff. She rounded off her run with a clean backflip and scored 86.33 points.

This changes the top of the women's rankings and Astrid Cheylus now leads ahead of Hedvig Wessel and Manon Loschi, now in third place.

Snowboard ladies

With a technically demanding line through one of the steepest parts of the slope and a few airs, Núria Castán Barón, who had already won the competition in Verbier and Georgia, came third with 71.33 points. She therefore missed the chance to become world champion in Fieberbrunn. So it remains exciting, because Anna Martinez also continued to collect points. She chose the side facing away from the sun and impressed with a fast and flowing run, peppered with a few airs, which earned her 73 points. First place went to Erin Sauve, who dropped the Häusl Cliff and thus showed the biggest jump in her category. She collected further points with a few airs and was rewarded by the judges with a score of 90.33.

Núria Castán Barón remains at the top of the women's snowboarding ranking. Close on her heels, however, is Anna Martinez, with only a few points difference. Erin Sauve follows in bronze.

Ski men

The men's skiing was once again spectacular. Starting number one Maxime Chabloz performed a double backflip, but crashed on a cork 720. A total of five men scored over 90 points in the first run, including Japan's Tenra Katsuno, who backflipped the Häusl cliff and completed the run with another 360 and a backflip. But despite the impressive runs, only three riders can earn the podium. Canadian Marcus Goguen, who took his first win in Georgia about a fortnight ago, made it to third place. The judges awarded him 94.67 points for a breakneck run with two 360s above the Häusl cliffs and a huge backflip. Ranking leader Max Hitzig chose a similar line to last year's Fieberbrunn Pro Event, but went one better on the huge drop in the upper half of the slope and did a 360 above it. Two more big backflips and his fast and clean riding style earned him 95.33 points. Ben Richards took the win on his second run. After crashing on his first attempt, he impressed with a big 360 into the fall line over the Häusl cliff and didn't waste any momentum before the drop. There was no hesitation on the remaining run either, so he completed it with two more huge 360's. The fastest run of the day was awarded 97 points by the judges.

Max Hitzig continues to lead the ranking, followed by Marcus Goguen. Ben Richards is now in third place. The title fight has not yet been decided, so we can look forward to an exciting event next week in Verbier.
