Gear Review | Mammut Aenergy Air HS Hooded Jacket Women

A hardshell jacket for ski touring adventures

by Antonia Paulus 02/23/2023
The Aenergy Air HS Hooded Jacket Women hardshell jacket from Mammut promises very high breathability thanks to its optimised membrane technology and is characterised by its light weight and high durability. A faithful companion both on often sweaty ascents and adrenaline-fuelled descents.

First impression

The jacket has a very discreet design and can therefore be easily combined with different trousers, backpacks, headbands, etc. The orange and pink zips give the jacket a recognisable look and make it easy to be seen from a distance - which, in addition to its aesthetic appeal, is of course also a safety feature. The lightness, the colour combination and the easy-to-use and robust zips impress at first glance.

Tester and test conditions

I'm about 1.60 metres tall and weigh around 60 kilos. As I don't feel comfortable in overly tight outdoor clothing, I opted for the hardshell jacket in size medium. This also fits perfectly with an additional layer under the jacket. With a water column of 15000 mm, the jacket is a faithful companion even in rain and snow and protects against wind and cold. I have tested the jacket on ski tours, freeriding, tobogganing and cross-country skiing, and on days with little snow it has accompanied me when cycling and hiking.

The test conditions were very mixed in the period from December to February, so the jacket was tested for its robustness in a wide range of weather conditions and was in use almost every day.

Test report

The cut is regular fit and I personally find this cut very comfortable to wear, as I have enough freedom of movement and there is still room for an additional layer of clothing under the jacket. The large breast pocket is very easy to open and close, so skins, gloves, snacks etc. can be stowed away very easily and quickly. The inside pocket is ideal for small snacks, keys or wallets. The chest pocket is compatible with backpacks as it can be accessed without opening the waist or chest strap and is easy to use even when wearing gloves. The only drawback: a second chest pocket would be practical to keep things a little more organised and avoid having to mix all the additional materials into one pocket.

A major advantage of the Mammut hardshell jacket is its universal versatility. It has been specially designed for ski touring and the very light and breathable Pertex® Shield Air material ensures high breathability and weather resistance. Thanks to the underarm ventilation and breathability of the jacket, it is not only suitable for downhill skiing, but also for ski touring on the ascent. Of course, this depends on the temperature and your personal sensitivity to heat.

Conclusion

The Aenergy Air HS hardshell jacket from Mammut is a good choice for ski tours, but can also be used for other sports and is a very reliable companion in all weather conditions. The material is breathable, robust, windproof and weatherproof. The large chest pocket makes it quick and easy to stow skins and snacks, and at 370g the jacket hardly weighs a thing in your luggage.
