Gear Review | Mons Royale Approach Tech Mid Hoody

The casual mid-layer for cold days

by Stefanie Höpperger 04/13/2021
With the Approach Midlayer, Mons Royale has created a very warm and durable merino hooded jacket that is ideal for layering.

First impression

The material of the hooded jacket looks very robust and durable, the design is kept simple but is still lively thanks to the colour accents. As soon as I tried it on for the first time, I was delighted with the longer cut back with hem, which prevents the shirt from riding up. Nothing stands in the way of a warm back on a stormy ski tour!

Tester & Test conditions

I am 173 cm tall and weigh around 59kg, I wear the hoody in size S. It would probably also fit me in size XS, depending on whether you prefer to wear the hoody close-fitting or rather loose and what else you want to wear underneath. I mainly go ski touring, but the hoody also goes with me on my ice and rock climbing tours.

Test

The hoody is intended as a mid-layer for cold to very cold days and I absolutely agree with that. On very cold days, I wear it over a merino shirt on a ski tour on the ascent and as a midlayer when ice climbing. In milder or spring-like temperatures, I prefer to wear the hoody under a hard shell jacket on the descent or as a top layer. Compared to other products of the current lightweight generation, however, the hoody is rather heavy and requires a lot of storage space in the backpack.

It's great for climbing and can also be worn as a protective and warming layer when belaying. The robust material defies the sharp edges of the rock when you come into contact with it and you won't immediately have a hole in it like with pure merino hoodies.

The three-layer hood adapts perfectly to the head and protects in stormy conditions. The chest pocket offers space for small items that shouldn't get lost, such as a car key. I'm a fan of thumb loops anyway and the Approach Hoody has them in a very comfortable position for my taste.

The merino lining absorbs moisture well and regulates temperature and odour. Mons Royal also uses thousands of tiny air pockets on the inside of the merino, which trap the heat inside and keep you cosy and warm. The outside is made from hardwearing and durable polyester material.

Conclusion

A well-designed hooded jacket with practical materials, a great cut, casual look and super extras.
