Gear review | Mammut Broad Peak Pro IN Hooded Jacket

Warm down jacket that keeps you warm even in damp conditions

The Broad Peak Pro IN Hooded Jacket from Mammut is a particularly warm down jacket that has been specially developed for ski touring, ice climbing and hiking in cold weather. Thanks to a special treatment of the down, it keeps you warm even when wet.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The Broad Peak Pro IN Hooded Jacket from Mammut is a down jacket that has been specially developed to meet the needs of outdoor athletes such as ski tourers, ice climbers, mountaineers and hikers. The jacket immediately catches the eye thanks to its unusual design with two large elasticated pockets on the front. The jacket also has two large inner mesh pockets and two zippered pockets that are designed to be compatible with a climbing harness and backpack. With a fill weight of 150 grams of down (90 % goose down, 10 % goose feathers) and a fill power of 800 cuin, the jacket has a good ratio of weight, pack size and thermal performance. As you would expect from Mammut, the jacket is well made overall.

TESTER & TEST CONDITIONS

I am 179 cm tall and weigh around 70 kg. I tested the jacket in size M. It has a normal cut (regular fit) but still offers the necessary freedom of movement. It is the same size as I am used to from Mammut. I usually wear a size M for Mammut jackets. I was able to test the jacket on several days, whether on the slopes skiing, freeriding, ski touring, in everyday life or during other alpine activities.

GEAR REVIEW

The advantage of down jackets compared to PrimaLoft jackets is that down jackets are generally lighter and more compressible. I also personally find that they are much warmer, especially when you are not moving. However, the big advantage of PrimaLoft filling is that it keeps you warm even when the filling gets damp. This is exactly where Mammut comes in with the Broad Peak Pro IN Hooded Jacket: Thanks to the "DRY DOWN" technology, the down is still warm even in damp/wet conditions. The down insulation has been treated with a water-based, PFC-free treatment. As a result, the down no longer absorbs moisture and the fill power and insulating properties of the down should be maintained for up to seven days, even when constantly exposed to wet conditions.

The jacket is very comfortable for me in size M, the sleeves and length fit me perfectly, as I am used to from Mammut. The large number of pockets means you can stow a lot of gear and you can easily access the pockets even when wearing a climbing harness. The somewhat unusual-looking elastic outer pockets have proved particularly useful. This makes it easy to stow skins or gloves in them. The pockets are also ideal in combination with a hard shell jacket, as you don't have to open your warm down jacket every time you want to store something. In addition to the elasticated outer pocket, there are also two large inner pockets. Gloves or similar items can also be easily stowed in these pockets.

The hood still fits well over the helmet, but as with most jackets, I found the angle of movement somewhat restricted, although much less than usual. The jacket kept me pleasantly warm even in very cold temperatures (-15 degrees) and therefore fulfilled its purpose. But the jacket was also a pleasant companion in cold, wet temperatures of five degrees to zero degrees. In light drizzle, the jacket kept me warm even when it was slightly damp on the surface.

CONCLUSION

The down jacket fulfills its purpose: it keeps you pleasantly warm, especially on very cold days. The large number of pockets is very practical, allowing you to store all kinds of things. The elasticated pockets on the outside are particularly practical. Skins, maps or gloves can be stowed away quickly without having to open the jacket. This is particularly practical in combination with a hard shell jacket.
