Gear of the Week | Mammut Rime Light IN Hybrid Jacket

Lightweight and comfortable insulating jacket

If I had to choose a must-have piece of equipment that you need for practically all mountain sports, I would probably choose a thin insulating jacket. The new hybrid version of the Mammut Rime Light is just such a jacket, and I really like it!

Reduced to the essentials

I have the Rime Light IN Hybrid Hooded Jacket for men in size L. With my 183 cm and approx. 85 kg, it fits me well. There is also a women's version. I like the blue, but there are also various other colors.

The jacket is relatively thin for an insulating jacket and therefore not suitable for Himalayan expeditions or stays in the Arctic, but rather as an "always with you" insulating jacket for our latitudes. The low weight and small pack size also contribute to this.

The jacket only has fleece inserts on the sides and under the arms, the rest is made of soft, wind and water-repellent fabric insulated with Mammut LOOPINSULATION, a synthetic filling.

Overall, the jacket is quite simple - of course, after all, weight is important. It has two pockets in which you can keep your hands warm or store smaller items, as well as an inner pocket. There is also a close-fitting hood - there are no more features.

Comfortable to wear and flexible to use

The Rime Light is very soft and a little stretchy, making it very comfortable to wear. It can be worn as an insulating layer or as an outer layer in dry conditions. As it is a relatively thin insulating jacket, it can be easily combined with other layers using the onion principle, and I prefer to have two thinner insulating layers, currently usually the Rime Light and a fleece, than a thicker jacket with me, especially on ski tours, as the warmth can be easily adapted to the weather and activity level. I sometimes wore it as an outer layer when the temperatures were very low on the ascent. The jacket is warm and keeps the wind out, but is also relatively breathable. Nevertheless, I usually get too warm quickly on the ascent and the jacket goes into my backpack.

The jacket can be stowed away in one of its pockets and is then really very compact. It is therefore easy to take with you, even if you are not sure whether you really need it, for example when hiking in summer.

Conclusion

The Mammut Rime Light IN Hybrid Hooded Jacket is light, comfortable, warm, packs down small and is made from sustainable materials. For me, it definitely has what it takes to become a favorite piece!
