PowderAlert 12 2020/21 | Warming up for Ullr

Finally some fresh snow again!

by Lars Oelmann 03/10/2021
The average citizen fears it, the freerider hopes for it: late winter is coming. Ullr uses this alarm to warm up properly after the long break and to test his muscles. Before, hopefully, really getting stuck in next week. More on this in the medium term. After a more or less empty February, it's finally time to get going again!

To dampen your hopes right away: it's just enough for an alarm. The fresh snow will at least make Friday and Saturday a little nicer and once again offer more than the firn and ice we've had to make do with over the last 3 weeks. However, it won't get really deep until the upcoming alert 13.

Alert period and areas

The alert comes from the west and therefore only extends from the Arlberg to France, where the core is located. The period lasts until Saturday in the early morning, by which time the precipitation will have already subsided.

Wind

Storm, because a powerful low-pressure system has parked itself on the Atlantic, on whose southern flank the weather change will be initiated. Full amounts up to the French main ridge and into Valais/Northern Grisons.

Snowfall line

At first at 1600-1900m, but then drops rapidly. The full amounts are of course only available further up.

The amounts

From the Arlberg to France there are almost alarm amounts of 20-35cm. In France in the Isère or the Hautes Alpes also 30-40cm or a little more. As the whole thing is very short (just under 24 hours), there are hardly any congestion surprises

.

Where should I go?

I would aim for a leisurely tour on an alpine meadow or piste on Friday and not buy a lift ticket. There's not that much fresh snow.

Saturday alternates between strong winds, clouds and showers. So if the downhill weather doesn't suit you, just wait 10 minutes!

Mid-term

Sunday is the start and it will remain cold and wet. More on that on Saturday evening in feature length! It looks like it's going to be a good week with northern congestion. How well depends on the high axis, the current and so on. Nevertheless, the models have reached a pretty nice consensus. Therefore: All aboard the hype train. Chooo Chooo!
