New dump, old neighborhood. Ullr does the triple and sends another dump to the south. This time a cold front follows, so a few flakes may also fall in the north But first everything starts as usual, because above 2000 m it starts to snow in these minutes and doesn't stop until Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Where is it snowing? Everywhere on the southern and south-western slopes of the Alps and the Maritime Alps, mainly from Monte Rosa to Adamello and Engadine and from the Dolomites to Slovenia. The previous problems of the last snowfalls are also repeating themselves: while it can snow from 1800 m in Ticino and the Simplon region, the snow line in the east is again at 2200 m. But now for the good news: with the cold front arriving in the west on Saturday afternoon, it will drop to below 1500 m in the north. It won't arrive in the east until Sunday, so it will rain for a long time.
On the amount of fresh snow: 30 to 60 cm will fall from the Maritime Alps to the east, in the above-mentioned core zones it will also go towards 80 or 90 cm, although in the east this can only be very high up from 2500 m. Ullr will only possibly reach the magic meter in one or the other reservoir where everything fits, or not at all. As always with this warmth, it should be noted that the snowpack growth below 2200 to 2500 m will probably not come close to the amount of fresh snow. In the north, it's just a little sugary and I'm only mentioning it because I'm writing an alert anyway, as there won't be more than 15 to 30 cm from north-western Switzerland to the Arlberg. Nothing in the northeast. Where are we going when and who will write it to me in the Whatsapp group? Dear Instagram generation, that's the golden question, because on Saturday you can't really advise trees in the south, as there's no base below 2000 m and the snow line only approaches 1500 m at sunset. On Sunday you have to play roulette and hope that Ullr shouts "Tout est bleu!" in the predetermined ski area and the sky releases the sun. Where that might be in the south is difficult, but it tends to be towards the afternoon and then more in the west. So more likely in Valais than in the Upper Engadine. It could also open up in Carinthia and eastern Italy, but not in between.
Avalanche danger is a big issue, especially at high alpine altitudes. Further down, everything will float away again, but reading bulletins and making sensible decisions is particularly important in early winter when powder fever sets in. So if you find good snow high up, it's better to think twice. In the medium term, the air will be out, but if something happens, it will be brought directly to this page by stagecoach and telegraphic message from the crystal ball. Powder to the people and good luck on Sunday!
