PowderAlert 9 2016/17 | North jam and real winter
01/10/2017 • Lars OelmannUllr has an understanding in mid-January and ends the early winter. At least in northern Switzerland and western Austria. Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to France and western Switzerland, where it snows for the first time since the beginning of November and you only reach the meadow riding phase for the time being. In the far east, there is more snow on the base so that freeriding can continue there. -

PowderAlert 7 2016/17 | Snow in the Northern Alps
01/02/2017 • Lars Oelmann
At last. The time has come: there is a real northerly accumulation in - almost - the entire Northern Alps. For many areas from central Switzerland to Tyrol, this means that the first real snowfall of the season will come on January 5th. Oh well! This also means: don't forget to switch to early season mode. In terms of snow cover, it feels more like early/mid-November here. Further east, there is already a certain base and Ullr serves you powder again. You can actually go freeriding "properly". -

Gear of the Week | Christmas Special 2016
12/10/2016 • PowderGuideAlthough there is still not much to see of winter 16/17 (at least in the northern Alps), 2016 is already fast approaching its end. First of all, however, we still have Christmas to celebrate and probably some presents to collect, but also to hand out! Once again this year, we asked the members of the PowderGuide editorial team about their Christmas wishes and present the answers here - maybe someone still needs some inspiration. -

SnowFlurry 5 2016/17 | Fair weather phases and the snow cover
12/03/2016 • Lukas Ruetz
Periods of fine weather with wintry temperatures trigger massive build-up transformation processes in early winter, or when the snow cover is not very thick. This is usually not a problem during the fine weather phase, but is definitely problematic when the weather changes. -

WeatherBlog 5 2016/17 | Snow cannons are happy about dry high pressure and cold weather
11/29/2016 • Lea Hartl
A generally mild fall comes to a sunny but cold end. While the south-western Alps have received a decent base over the last week, the Föhn winds in the north have taken away most of the snow again. At least it is now cold enough again to run up all the available snow cannons and get the slopes in shape for the Christmas rush. In light of the current situation: What is artificial snow? -

11/22/2016 • Lea Hartl
The Alps are on the edge of a Western European trough in a strong southerly current. While it snows on the southern slopes of the Alps, at least at high altitudes, the Föhn dominates in the north. How does the Föhn work again? And what's next for the weather? -

WeatherBlog 2 2016/17 | Uncertain times
11/08/2016 • Lea Hartl
The Alps are caught in a north-westerly current that repeatedly brings disturbances to the Alps. From today, Wednesday, until Friday, there will be considerable amounts of fresh snow, especially in the west. From the weekend onwards, the forecasts are still rather uncertain. It will be milder but remain wet with a chance of an Italian low. We'll leave the details to the oracle this time, who will be in touch later today. -

Study | SLF - How has the number of avalanche victims changed over the last 80 years?
11/02/2016 • SLF
An analysis of the data on avalanche victims in Switzerland shows: The number of victims in secured terrain has decreased significantly over the last 80 years. In open terrain, it fell after a peak in the 1980s and has remained relatively constant since then - despite more snow sports enthusiasts off-piste.
