WeatherBlog 8 2022/23 | Winter is back!
01/11/2023 • Lea Hartl
After a long break, the PowderOracle has brought us good news. Maybe there will even be another alarm at the weekend? Thanks to a strong north-westerly current, the next few days will be pretty wintry and at least the north will gradually get a base layer in mid-altitudes too! Also: New glacier study with predictably bad news for the ice in the Alps. -

WeatherBlog 7 2022/23 | Warm, Warmer, New Year
01/04/2023 • Lea Hartl
The air that currently surrounds us was over the Azores just a few days ago. You can feel connected to distant parts of the world, imagine you can smell the sea and ponder the beauty in the complexity of atmospheric movement as you glide down into the valley on Alpine artificial snow bands. You don't have to, of course, but the WeatherBlog tries to adopt a relaxed attitude in view of the turn of the year and not fret about the weather. -

WeatherBlog 5 2022/23 | User question and warm, windy Christmas thaw
12/21/2022 • Lea Hartl
A user question has reached the WeatherBlog: How many days per winter is there snow in Obergurgl? Where can you find data on this? We are always happy to receive questions and especially those that we can answer to some extent! The weather is not very Christmassy, with little snow and too warm, so we prefer to think about other things and today we are looking at weather data from Obergurgl. -

Snow of Tomorrow | The Good Side
12/12/2022 • Lisa Amenda
Skiing is destroying the environment, destroying the climate and melting glaciers. Then there is the war, the energy crisis and the climate crisis. But we still don't want to be discouraged by these crises. After all, in between all the bad news, there is also some good news from time to time! Snow of Tomorrow focuses on good news instead of crisis posts at the start of the season. -

Despite the relatively cold Easter days, we are taking big steps towards summer. The PowderGuide weather is also approaching the summer break and we will soon discontinue the usual weather service. If it does get wintry again, the WeatherBlog will report on a case-by-case basis. -

WeatherBlog 20 2021/22 | April weather
04/06/2022 • Lea Hartl
After the dry, dusty March, the unsettled April weather is a relief, at least according to the WeatherBlog. Finally something is happening again! In the last few days, with fresh snow and low temperatures, there has even been a real winter feeling, even if the base unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. It will continue to be changeable and stormy until the weekend, then the weather should calm down. -

WeatherBlog 18 2021/22 | Boredom
03/23/2022 • Lea Hartl
If it were in any way promising, the WeatherBlog would go on strike. But unfortunately, as we all know, you can't negotiate with the weather and so we remain trapped in the dry boredom of the concrete high, which is slowly but surely becoming a depressing monotony. On the crystal ball horizon there are signs, albeit still uncertain, of a late frost. -

Snow of tomorrow | The energy transition in conflict
03/14/2022 • Irene Welebil (ÖAV)
In order to achieve the Paris climate targets, the energy transition needs to step up a gear. In Austria, the plan is to generate 100% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The fact that the energy transition must be a major goal for all of us in the fight against the climate crisis is not open to debate. The question is how it will be implemented, as the transformation of the energy supply will have a massive impact on nature and the landscape. -

WeatherBlog 15 2021/22 | Calm weather, turbulent world
03/02/2022 • Lea Hartl
The Alpine region lies under a large-scale high-pressure bridge that stretches from the Azores to the Baltic Sea. With a generally flat pressure distribution, a low pressure system in south-eastern Europe is holding back and dampening temperatures. The calm, mostly sunny weather is expected to continue until the weekend. -

Snow of Tomorrow | Permafrost in Climate Change
02/28/2022 • Tobias Hipp
Permafrost - permanently and continuously frozen ground. Direct associations: the vast expanses of tundra in Siberia, where houses stand on "stilts" because of this, the northern Canadian wilderness or the freezing cold Arctic - all really far away. But what the Kitzsteinhorn, Zugspitze, Gemsstock or Aiguille du Midi have to do with it and why a 40° steep north-facing slope is not just about tour planning and avalanche conditions, you can find out in this issue of "Snow of Tomorrow".
