TouringTip | Birgitzköpfl

The snow trickles softly - between headlamp lights and powder dreams

11/27/2025
Theresa Schranner
It was dark and the moon was shining brightly as a VW bus drove slowly around the corner at 5 p.m. in the afternoon. People were sitting outside, quietly engrossed in conversation, when a thick flake slowly fell out of the sky.

12:04 - Luki: "Fancy a night tour in Axams?"

12:04 - Resi: "Shüsh. Let’s go."

No sooner said than done.

The meeting point was at 17:00 in Innsbruck. It wasn't night yet, but the darkness said otherwise. 26 minutes later we arrived at the Axamer parking lot. Due to the limited parking time that day (20:00), we spontaneously changed our plans and opted for the more moderate version of the adjacent Birgitzköpfl (1982 m): no hairpin bends, just a leisurely climb.

Sounds boring?

Ski boots on, skins on and off you go!

Moderate tours can have their downsides if you find an overcrowded parking lot at lunchtime.

We were the second car in the parking lot, and while we were putting on our boots, the next ones arrived.
So we had the tour to the top all to ourselves - unplanned and anti-cyclical.
From the parking lot in the hairpin bend, there is a small path to the right of the toboggan run that you follow. It winds its way through the enchanted forest. The snow covering the trees was dimly illuminated by our headlamps.

Like a tunnel made of trees, at the end of which Luki's headlamp shines.

Later, always following the trail, we head up to the old ski slope, crossing the toboggan run. The path thins out and we reach an open meadow, where the extent of the snowfall becomes clear. Real pillows cover the ground, and it snows and snows and snows - beautiful.
Below the summit, there is a hut to stop off at, the Birgitzer Alm, but unfortunately it was closed, so we trudged straight to the flat summit peak.

On arrival at the top, it was time to change, take off our skins, put on our helmets and somehow attach our headlamps to our helmets.

And off we go!

On the way down, we came across the battery-powered torchlight hike. But it wasn't so bad in terms of visibility.

A fun descent in prime conditions: untouched snow, fluffy powder and a blast.
The way we went up was also our descent - first over the open powder slopes, then onto the toboggan run through the forest and further along the forest path, the edges of which still offered enough fresh snow to whizz through playfully.

With a total duration of just under two hours and an altitude difference of around 650 meters, the tour is perfect for a relaxed walk after work.
A wonderful and, above all, easy ski tour on the edge of the Dolomite-like Kalkkögel - a tour that you should definitely do at least once.
