Videos of the Week #17 2025/26 | Of the Black Sea

A character-driven journey with Türkiye's mountains

02/27/2026
Hannes Hemper
Two projects from the East: Giray Dedali in Turkey and Trygg Lind in Iraq - two really beautiful films that show the local culture and visit the ski scene there. Nicholas Wolken, the gymnastics genius, in the spotlight. Skiing and jazz - how do they go together? Plus a solo trip: two days in the mountains as a splitboard ASMR. Stay safe out there and enjoy the powder.

Video 1: Of the Black Sea (Ski Film) by Giray Dadali

Just outside New York, one of the most influential freestyle crews of its time emerged in the 2000s: the Dadali brothers, Andy Perry and Will Wesson - backyard setups, creativity and lots of style. Their father emigrated from Turkey to the USA and married an American. Giray and Ahmet, two of five siblings, discovered their passion for skiing at an early age and made it to the top of the scene.

In this film, Giray returns to his roots and puts the Turkish freeride scene in the spotlight. It exists - and it is heart-warming. A strong, personal project that shows that skiing unites us all in the mountains, no matter where we come from.

Rider: Giray Dadali and friends

Video 2: Two Days, The Tetons, and Alex Yoder | Patagonia

No conversations, no cell phone - just real sound. This is as close as you can get to the feeling. Pure splitboard ASMR. A solo mission with equipment sled and camera, two days alone in the mountains.

Rider: Alex Yoder

Video 3: Simple As A Turn | Patagonia Films

My favorite snowboard carver Nicholas Wolken. The creative mind behind Korua in the spotlight - as simple as a turn and yet so much more. His story from pro to product development.

The turn - that's what riding is all about. A strong film concept that is dedicated to a clear topic and accompanies it with analysis.

Rider: Nicholas Wolken, James Niederberger

Video 4: FORM - The Intersection of Free Skiing and Jazz

Xander Guldman, his brother Jordan and their childhood friend Coltor start a new project - skiers, filmmakers and jazz musicians all in one. A dream: their own soundtrack, recorded live and perfectly matched to the lines, filmed by their brother.

Everything was filmed in a zone on Donnerberg called "ASI", where Xander was already out and about in the backcountry as a child. Great riding and a beautifully rounded concept that combines film and music in a special way.

Riders: Xander Guldman and Jordan Guldman

Video 5: Halfway to Baghdad - An Iraqi Kurdistan Skiing Odyssey

In February 2025, Trygg Lind and his friend Christopher Lange travel to the Kurdish region in the north-east of Iraq - initially skeptical as to whether there would be any good skiing there at all. With little advance notice, they set off for Khoman and experience an intense week between impressive mountains, surprisingly good snow and overwhelming hospitality. The film summarizes this formative journey, which fundamentally changed their ideas about Iraq - accompanied musically by their hosts and Trygg himself.

Riders: Kit Monsen, Christopher Lange and Trygg Lind

Video 6: KIMBO NATION 25 WINNER

The first video qualifier for the Kimbo Session - one of the most legendary gatherings in the ski world in Kläppen, Sweden, hosted by Kimbo. Out of 98 videos submitted, Mainio Ormio came out on top. A stylish rider, and I'm looking forward to seeing him on Kimbo's setup this spring.

After being canceled last year due to the weather, the 10th edition is finally celebrating its revival.

Rider: Mainio Ormio

Video 7: Freeride World Champs turned into a Paragliding Trip!

One of the funniest vlogs of the two. Valentin and Max are on their way to the World Championships - but see them more as a side quest and follow their main quest instead: paragliding. Super relaxed atmosphere and lots of humor.

Riders: Valentin Rainer and Max Hitzig

Video 8: The Dance of the Moon | Vol. 1

A short film about a shared love of skiing and dance. Shot in Red Mountain, Canada, and Innsbruck - a small, personal art project by myself.

Rider: Hannes Hemper

Video 9: Skiing the Zombie Apocalypse (Extreme)

A couloir with more names than runs - "Zombie Apocalypse" sums it up best. I can hardly believe how narrow and steep it is and how you can even get back down there. Big respect to the riders for this ride.

Riders: Clayton Herman, Erich Roepke and Jim Ryan

Video 10: The Alps Explained by FactSpark

Not a ski or snowboard film, but a video that explains the Alps - from Liguria to the Hungarian plain. Simply great to learn more about our home mountains.

Contest of the week: Men's Freeski Big Air Final

This will go down in the history of the ski world - what a final! In the last three runs, each rider shows a new trick and completely turns the rankings around. One of the best moments in Olympic history.
