An essential part of any ski touring or freeride equipment is the avalanche transceiver. It is well known that this was not the case at the beginning of the 1970s, when the first avalanche transceivers came onto the market. With the MINI IPS, PIEPS is launching a very compact avalanche transceiver onto the market this winter, which you can win here.

LVS from PIEPS - a long history with a pioneering role

In the early 1970s, the Austrian company from Styria launched its first avalanche transceiver onto the market. With just one antenna, it was still quite cumbersome at the time, but it was definitely possible to locate a buried person faster than without such a device.

Also because they were rather clunky, hardly affordable and simple in terms of technology, they were not really appealing to many ski tourers at first. Over the next half century, PIEPS has continued to advance the technology with other companies. Nowadays, three-antenna devices, large search strip widths and a lot of additional technology are used to search for and locate people much faster, and avalanche transceivers are now part of every basic set of touring equipment.

A small milestone will be launched this winter: the MINI IPS, which combines state-of-the-art technology with a compact design and features a large display with intuitive user guidance. As soon as the first devices are available, our testers will test this in intensive practical applications and we hope to be able to provide a gear review article in our magazine soon.

Sources of interference from avalanche transceivers - avoiding electronic interference

In the age of smartphones, Spotify, sports watches, Insta, GoPro & Co. but also, for example, headlamps or electric avalanche airbags, modern mountaineers are hardly ever on the move without at least one source of electromagnetic interference. The minimum distances recommended by the UIAA should always be maintained.

Not to be forgotten: Power poles, lift systems, snow cannons, but also passive metallic objects such as lunch boxes, avalanche shovels, aluminum rescue blankets, etc. can also act as sources of interference. A very readable article on the influence on the electronics of avalanche transceivers was published in November 2023 by DAV Sicherheitsforschung.

These electronic interferences can impair signal quality. The Interference Protection System (IPS) from PIEPS minimizes interference in transmission mode and thus counteracts this problem. The technology was first presented in the PIEPS PRO IPS two years ago and is now also installed as standard in its 'little brother', the MINI IPS.

Compact, lightweight and high-tech - the new PIEPS MINI IPS

According to the manufacturer, the MINI IPS weighs just 158 grams and is also quite small and handy at 10×7×2 cm. Nevertheless, it makes no or hardly any compromises on a technological level. With a search strip width of 50 meters, the range is slightly less than that of the PRO IPS, but functions such as IPS, dynamic search strip width, Search Assist Plus, adjustable group check distance, app-supported device check, etc. are all implemented as standard in the MINI IPS. With intuitive user guidance and a recommended retail price of €299, the device is particularly interesting for beginners, clubs and rental stations.

And this is how you can win

Whether you're a freeride beginner or a ski touring expert, here's your chance to win one of the first MINI IPS from PIEPS worth €299!
