LVS from PIEPS - a long history with a pioneering role
In the early 1970s, the Austrian company from Styria launched its first avalanche transceiver onto the market. With just one antenna, it was still quite cumbersome at the time, but it was definitely possible to locate a buried person faster than without such a device.
Also because they were rather clunky, hardly affordable and simple in terms of technology, they were not really appealing to many ski tourers at first. Over the next half century, PIEPS has continued to advance the technology with other companies. Nowadays, three-antenna devices, large search strip widths and a lot of additional technology are used to search for and locate people much faster, and avalanche transceivers are now part of every basic set of touring equipment.
A small milestone will be launched this winter: the MINI IPS, which combines state-of-the-art technology with a compact design and features a large display with intuitive user guidance. As soon as the first devices are available, our testers will test this in intensive practical applications and we hope to be able to provide a gear review article in our magazine soon.
