Snow depth prediction game 2025/2026 - Jubilee season

The legendary PG snow depth prediction game enters its anniversary season!

11/06/2025
Anselm Köhler
There is one thing you can take away from last winter: It can only get better. In terms of the amount of snow, the winter was weak and had long enough dry spells between new snowfalls. This winter got off to a better start. The first PowderAlert came unexpectedly early, and the first ConditionsReports have already arrived and look promising. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Ullr that it will once again cover the mountains properly. Of course, the snow depth prediction game is back - this time in the 10th anniversary edition or tradition!

The PG snow depth prediction game is already in its 10th season! This is an opportunity for us to expand a little and we would like to reveal in advance that there will also be variations of our now legendary prediction game this winter at FFF and FRT. Some of you may already be able to guess what the abbreviations mean and where else there will be betting this year. For everyone else: Just keep an eye on our current news and follow our social channels and you'll find out more soon! Maybe as early as tomorrow evening...

Review - the winners of last season

Despite little snow last season, there are of course winners: inside the 2024/2025 snow depth prediction game! By the beginning of January, 5 out of 11 prediction games had already taken place. The remaining predictions were then distributed over the period from mid-March with classic late winter dumps in April.

From prediction number 9 at the end of March, nothing has changed in the top places. A ranking list with all the final results can be found in the image.

The winnings for the 2024/2025 season go to:

El Viejo - with a deviation of 0.062, he wins an absolute cracker of inestimable value as first prize! With a small catch... Because the ski building workshop of his self-designed ski takes place in the artisan ski manufactory Valhalla in Freiburg ;)

Ralf468 wins a PowderGuide.com insulated hooded jacket worth €219.95 with a deviation of 0.106. Not all sizes of the current colors are available anymore, but please be informed in advance that we will add new colors soon! Of course, other products from the PG-shop can also be purchased in the corresponding value.

Bobonik wins with a deviation of 0.111 as third prize one of the new PowderGuide.com fleece hoodies in fender green or midnight worth 149.95 euros.

Congratulations to the winners! It should be noted that almost all players had some very good tips - if you play along more consistently, the chance of making it into the top 3 increases enormously...

New game with the same rules

Whenever a "significant" storm brings plenty of fresh snow to the Alps, Ullr and his oracle are known to give an estimate of the expected amount of fresh snow as a PowderAlert. In a PA, not only the amount but also a rough core zone is mentioned. The prediction game takes place at a measuring station in the core zone: you predict the amount of fresh snow and then compare who was closest to the amount actually measured. For each PA, the measuring station, the period over which the prediction is made, the deadline for submitting a prediction and the initial snow depth are stated. The winner of the prediction game is the person who submits the five best predictions over the course of the season.

And what is there to win?

We have come up with something special for the jubilee season: The winner:in can look forward to a pair of new skis from one of our ski partners and of course there are once again high-quality PG clothes for the other places on the podium.

How much snow is the new snow total

The new snow total, i.e. the number you are looking for, is defined here as the maximum snow depth minus the initial snow depth in centimetres. The image illustrates this graphically. In this example, the forecast period is 48 hours with an initial snow depth of 75 cm. It most probably snowed most of the time during these two days. In the last few hours it snowed less or not at all, so that the snow cover could settle and thicken. The maximum snow depth was 128 cm, resulting in a new snow total of 128 cm minus 75 cm, i.e. 53 cm.

Note: Even if new snowfall amounts are sometimes displayed at weather stations, our own definition of the maximum change in snow depth applies in the prediction game. In the graph here, the red bars with 150 cm in the prediction period would be unrealistic.

Quota as a measure of deviation

The deviation between the predicted (HN_t) and measured new snowfall (HN_m) is defined as the quota Q:

Q = | HN_t - HN_m | / HN_m,

i.e. the amount of the difference between prediction and measurement, normalized to the measurement. This results in the limit values Q = 0 for guessed to the nearest centimeter, Q = 1 for not guessed at all (HN_t = 0), and Q > 1 for completely wrong ...
For the deviation percentages, the odds are multiplied by one hundred.

Don't be put off by the odds formula! Each PowderAlert is accompanied by the current interim result of the prediction game, so you always know where you stand and who your closest competitors are...

And how do I win now?

Only the five best prediction count. This means that the overall winner at the end of the season is the one with the lowest average of the five best odds. This means that you don't have to play every tip and can also enter the betting game later in the year, because only the five best tips count. As this winter is going to be awesome, there will be more than 15 PowderAlerts or prediction games this time.

How do I play along?

To play along, all you have to do is:

1) Regularly check the PowderAlert to make sure you don't miss a tip.

2) Log in with your PowderGuide.com account or quickly register.

3) Study the PG-ICON fresh snow maps and assess how good they are.

4) Submit your prediction of the amount of fresh snow over the specified period as a comment under the respective PowderAlert.

So that you always know about a new PA in good time, there is an e-mail notification for each new prediction game. Just get in touch with me! Or you can subscribe to the PowderGuide.com Instagram channel to make sure you never miss a PowderAlert or betting game! Soon there will also be a way to be informed about every new PowderAlert on the website.

Have fun with the 2025/2026 snow tip game: Ullr is keeping its fingers crossed!
