PowderAlert 7 2024/25 | We still have a pulse!

It’s still winter, really! The oracle remains cautiously optimistic.

03/09/2025 • by Lars Oelmann
After weeks of drought, there is finally some hope – at least in the south. This small snowfall could be just the beginning.

It’s finally snowing more than 30 cm. Is this the turning point, or just the last twitch of our 24/25 season? Is Ullr standing by with the defibrillator, or will the 24/25 patient only be kept alive artificially? Spoiler Alert: Both, but Ullr probably won't create Ullr's monster. Instead, he’s just bringing the seemingly dead back to life, so the family doesn’t lose hope. After this brief first sign of life, the outlook is fairly positive, and according to the crystal ball, we should see further signs on the pulse monitor this week. Dr. Oracle hasn’t yet released the 24/25 season for organ donation. Whether there will be a Lazarus late winter, only time will tell.

Alert period and areas

The alert will last until Tuesday morning, covering the entire Southern Alps, with the core likely stretching from the Simplon to the Sea Alps, where the maximum snowfall is expected.

Wind

After the current foehn storm in the north, the wind during the snowfall in the south will not be as dramatic. There will still be POW higher up, but the snowfall will be significantly weaker towards the main ridge.

Snowline

In the sheltered areas of the south, the snowfall line will be between 1300 and 1600 meters. In the Sea Alps and along the main ridge heading north, it will rise to around 1600 to 1900 meters.

The amounts

From Slovenia to the Simplon, the snow amounts in the lee areas are just at the alarm threshold, around 30-40 cm, with no major surprises. From the Simplon across the Turin Alps to the south, we expect 40-50 cm, and in the Sea Alps, I wouldn't rule out up to 60 cm.

Where should I go?

You don't necessarily need to travel, but if you're already there, you can ski where there's still a good base. Tuesday should bring a break in the weather, before clouds move in again on Wednesday and possibly more snow on Thursday. However, if you do plan to head out, aim for the south, as that’s where the action will likely be in the mid-term.

Medium term

As another system seems to be forming in all the crystal balls, the oracle remains cautiously optimistic about a possible new alert on Wednesday. As mentioned, if you’re on the move, focus your thoughts on the Southern Alps. In the north, it still looks like nothing is happening. There won't be much time left for large parts of Austria to save the season.
