Splittie of the Week | TouringTip La Rossa

Splitboarding area behind Gemsstock to the right

12/01/2025
Tobias Leistenschneider
Dear Splitties, some mountains challenge, others reward. A bit pathetic, but La Rossa did both. I was traveling with my longtime touring partner and what was planned as a classic splitboard tour turned into an intense adventure in Alaskan scenery and solitude; and a great splitboarding terrain.

From glorious weather to a whiteout in a gondola ride

Our start in Andermatt couldn't have been better: bright sunshine. But appearances were deceptive. At the top of Gemsstock, we were abruptly greeted by a full-blown whiteout and a violent storm. We waddled down the stairs and first had to realize that we couldn't see anything. The variant is no secret, but there was no track in the snow and the short but steep traverse was fully downwind and well blown in. Waiting was the order of the day. But then the sky continued to clear and we were able to set off. The descent took us into the Gafallensaum and further along the Bortwasser. This route is absolutely cool in terms of scenery. For us splitboarders, this more southerly line made much more sense, as we were able to elegantly circumnavigate the opposite slope on the more northerly route. With even better visibility, we then used the afternoon for a first exploration tour to the Rotstocklücke before moving into our accommodation for the night: the Vermigelhütte.

A fantastic hut

The Vermigelhütte is simply fantastic! We had it to ourselves and enjoyed the feeling of pure seclusion. Everything you need for a winter base is there: The hut is perfectly equipped and cozy. After registering by email, you have access to the entire hut and can use a great wood-burning stove in the spacious kitchen. The hut warden places enormous trust in us tourers. Please respect this during your stay and always leave the hut in perfect condition so that it stays that way! The hut is usually staffed on weekends.

Bassa della Rossa and the line of lines

The next morning, the terrain was everything you could wish for. Our first destination was the Bassa della Rossa on the western summit. We had chosen a wide and not too steep couloir there. The weather was stable and sunny, the snow promising, the mood relaxed and the spirit high: it was all there. Even on the approach, we both noticed how our eyes kept wandering to a striking, broad and homogeneous slope below the saddle to the eastern summit. We didn't talk about it yet, but somehow we knew that we would end up there today.

But first, the planned tour. The Bassa della Rossa was an experience in itself. The landscape up there is magnificent. The wide couloir was covered in wonderful snow, followed by a soul descent like no other.

Spontaneous detour into the world of our videos

After a short breakfast break, we - of course - skied up this more easterly slope. Once we reached the top of the basin below the saddle, we realized that the last section didn't look so wild. The decision to try it was spontaneous, but by no means taken head over heels. A thorough check of the conditions is mandatory here.

We checked the snow cover and found it to be stable. Crampons and ice axe out! Go!

The last ascent was steep, no question, but the effort and focus were rewarded with a phenomenal view. The descent itself was unique for us. The snow was not too deep, but fast and grippy in terrain that still takes our breath away when we look back.

We usually only see lines like this in "Videos of the Week"!

Exit: foggy day

On the third day, we chose the route to the west to leave the area. It led over the Rotstock and down the long Guspistal valley until we finally reached the Gotthard Pass road and Hospental.

Unfortunately, the weather was much worse than predicted: fog, wind and cold, little and if then very diffuse visibility - and the snow in the Guspis was unfortunately no longer quite as good. But hey, that's also part of mountaineering. We still managed to bag the summit, but once there it was clear: just get out safely. Business as usual.

La Rossa - A splitboard area

I can only warmly recommend this corner to all splitboarders. The terrain is made for us: there are no long flat sections, but above all great, wide, not too steep slopes. With the right conditions, the area offers plenty of opportunities for creative lines. And right between SAC routes. You're sure to be on your own more often here.

The couloir guiding presented here is only possible in spring when the conditions are right.

However, the entire area around the Vermigelhütte is over 2,000 m above sea level and is virtually accessible from the top with the Gemsstockbahn. In combination with an exit via the Oberalp Pass, the area is well worth a detour even in the early season.

Attention! The terrain from Maighelspass to Maighelsgütte is actually flat. Here you have to run out with the splitboard, but you can reward yourself with the north-facing slopes on Piz Cavradi, for example.

So dear splitboarders, the season is starting, the first snow is here. It's like looking for mushrooms, the really secret and good spots are of course never revealed, but maybe you still have some good ideas for the early season? Where do you like to go? Share them with us in the comments!
