And again an early onset of winter brings the betting game out of its winter escape in the south! This time it missed the first few PowderAlerts at 10-15 degrees Celsius in Finale Ligure on the rocks. But yes, you can't deny it: It's winter and no longer fall. It's the beginning of the season of skiing, powder, PowderAlert and snow depth prediction game!

Every two years, full-time snow scientists - both practitioners and those with a more theoretical bent - meet to exchange knowledge at the International Snow Science Workshop, the so-called "Ei-S-S-double-you" (ISSW)*. Every two weeks, we take a look at individual topics from the last conference and summarize them in a generally understandable way, or at least try to. Okay, now we can no longer deny it: Winter has arrived, in the southern parts of the Alps there is already between 1 and 2 meters of snow (Airolo, Simplon, Engadin, see SNOWGRID). So it's time to evaluate last season's prediction game and start the next one.

This year's winter season is in full swing. PowderAlerts are rattling towards the Alps every 4 days. Not surprisingly, there are constant reports of "well above average snow depth", "very high avalanche danger" and 4-5 star condition reports. An interim result of the snow depth prediction game is needed!

I've just been on a summer getaway in Croatia and was shocked to discover that it's already snowing there too. So, there's no denying it: it's winter and the season of skiing, powder, PowderAlert and snow depth prediction games has begun!

Ullr on a surfing trip at the beach = winter over = prediction game over = final results and overall winner! firsttrack won with an average deviation of less than 5%, followed by chevchelios with a deviation of 7% and skimale1982 with 8%. Congratulations!

Anyone who thinks they can simply go splitboarding with hard-shell boots is mistaken. A functioning AT setup, as it is called in modern German, still requires a lot of trial and error as well as a certain amount of motivation to tinker in order to find the individually functional settings.

In any case, a term that has to do with buoyancy and hovering just before flying. The Jones Hovercraft lives up to the promise of its name: it can't be brought down by any powder in the world.
