Gear Review | Julbo Peak Helmet and Quickshift Goggle

Lightweight helmet and well-ventilated goggles

by Alexander Braschel 03/04/2021
Julbo was kind enough to provide us with a combination of the double-certified "The Peak" helmet and the "Quickshift" goggle. I have tested how the items perform in practice.

First impression

At first glance, the helmet makes an extremely high-quality impression. The workmanship is top-notch, there is no protrusion anywhere and you can't see any glue residue or anything similar. The design is simple and looks good. The shell is black, only the straps for the chin and some of the ventilation holes are red. It definitely fits in everywhere.

There are a total of 17 ventilation holes in the shell, which I find very impressive, as I find that most helmets tend to neglect ventilation. The chin strap has a tried-and-tested magnetic fastener, which is also used by some other manufacturers. The helmet can therefore be closed very easily with one hand.

Test and test conditions

The helmet and goggles spent around 35 days on my head during various activities (piste, freeride, ski tour, teaching, paragliding). All kinds of weather conditions were covered.

Fit

The helmet comes in 3 different sizes, so there should be a suitable size for everyone. As usual, the size can be adjusted at the back on the wheel and therefore perfectly adapted to the head. I personally had no pressure points or anything else - on the contrary, you hardly feel the helmet due to its low weight. The goggles can also be easily adjusted to fit the helmet - they have a pleasantly large field of vision, but still offer me enough space for my big nose.

Practical test

The Julbo Peak is double certified, which means it fulfils the standard for ski helmets and climbing helmets at the same time. This means you can also take it with you for ice climbing or a cool autumn climbing tour without any problems. As already mentioned, the helmet sits light as a feather on the head thanks to its low weight of approx. 410g. The many ventilation openings ensure very good circulation and you can always keep a cool head. However, on very cold days (I had around -25°C in January in the Engadine) I found the air circulation almost a touch too much. Of course, you could wear a balaclava underneath. The ears of the helmet are only padded around the auricle. There is only a mesh directly in front of the auricle, through which you can even easily see. The acoustics, which also play a role for me as a ski instructor, are therefore extremely good and I was always able to hear my guests well. Incidentally, the ears can also be removed and refitted in a few simple steps. Another gadget is probably more interesting for the alpinists among you: the helmet has 2 clips on the front that can be used to attach a headlamp. Headlamps usually slip off ski helmets.

The Quickshift goggle comes with a self-tinting lens that automatically adjusts to the prevailing light conditions. Unlike old-school sunglasses, you don't notice that the lens gets darker or lighter, but visibility is optimal in all light conditions and it's nice not to have to think about whether to take the bad weather lens or the sunshine lens with you in the morning like with other goggles. The ventilation of the goggles, also in combination with the helmet, is excellent and I haven't had any fogged-up lenses on the descent so far.

Julbo has come up with something special for those who also like to wear the goggle on the ascent: Two pieces of the frame on the lower left and right edges of the goggle can be easily removed and replaced using a magnetic clip (see photos). Of course, this improves the ventilation even more. Personally, however, I have to say that I much prefer to use classic sunglasses on the ascent. I sweat quickly and the foam of the goggles would be completely soaked when I'm at the top, despite the ventilation. Incidentally, the extra ventilation is not suitable for the descent, as it makes my eyes water. But that's not what it's designed for.

Conclusion

The helmet & goggle combo is primarily aimed at freeriders and ski tourers, but of course also offers classic piste skiers everything they need. The low weight and good ventilation are not only an advantage on the ascent!
