Gear review | Valhalla Bamboo 104

The Black Forest gateau among freeride skis - a PowderGuide edition

03/09/2026
Max Elias
A comparison between a freeride ski and a Black Forest gateau may seem unusual at first glance, as they are two fundamentally different things: a piece of sports equipment and a culinary product. Nevertheless, some metaphorical parallels can be drawn here: Both skis and cakes are made by industrious craftsmen with expertise and attention to detail - craftsmanship and tradition. They represent a combination of traditional materials and modern production techniques. - Enjoyment and experience: skiing in open terrain offers an intense and eventful skiing experience. Enjoying a Black Forest gateau is at least as sensual an experience, where flavors and textures merge.

Tester and test conditions

As a test rider for the Valhalla 104, I started the race at 187 cm and an unladen weight of 85 kg. With equipment I added a few kilos. Actually, only my children take me to the ski area, otherwise I love ski touring. As I've been skiing the Valhalla 115 for over a year now, I was really looking forward to testing its "little brother".

Fortunately, the test conditions have been quite varied so far, in line with the winter so far. The skis were tested both on tour and in the ski area.

Test report

The Valhalla 104 is not only a freeride ski, but also a touring ski and therefore appeals to skiers who are looking for a versatile, lightweight ski for off-piste powder adventures and demanding tours. With its 104 waist and lightweight construction, the Valhalla 104 promises ultimate fun in deep snow and effortless handling on routes with intensive ascents.

I really like the Valhalla 104 because of its eye-catching design. The successful combination of vibrant colors and dynamic lines gives the ski a modern yet sporty appearance. The construction of the ski promises a balanced mix of stability and lightness. Particularly noteworthy is the remarkably low weight of the ski, which makes it an ideal companion for extended tours.

Even though the Valhalla 104 was primarily developed for use in deep snow, it surprises with decent performance on groomed slopes. The wide waist does not allow the same agility as narrower piste skis, but the ski can still be carved through the ski area in a controlled and stable manner.

The Valhalla 104 shows its strengths above all in medium and wide turns, although it also performs effortlessly in short drift turns. With energetic use of the edge, it masters even demanding conditions with ease and maintains a fluid line. On compact surfaces and groomed slopes, sporty skiers might miss a little more dynamism and momentum. In somewhat more "difficult" conditions, e.g. snow crust/harsh snow, you notice a certain lack of flexibility compared to the 115. For me, this meant that the ski required more power to guide it in an orderly fashion.

The Valhalla 104 unfolds its full potential in powder snow and on tours. In fresh powder snow, the ski glides effortlessly through the snow and offers impressive float. Turns of all kinds are mastered with ease and skiing on unprepared slopes is a real pleasure. The Valhalla 104 is also light and efficient on tours, which is a great advantage on demanding ascents.

After the older models were still a little flabby on the chest, Freddi has quickly reworked and has tackled and eliminated the slight weakness in the current model by adding a little more stiffness in front of the binding. The head confectioner continues to optimize in his workshop in Freiburg and goes to great lengths when selecting his ingredients.

The core of the ski consists of bamboo, two triaxial layers of carbon and a biaxial layer of flax that extends from the toe to the tip. The flax reinforcement in the shovel ensures balanced damping and good tracking stability. With ABS sidewalls and P-Tex racing base, the ski has the right bite on the piste. The carefully selected construction gives the Valhalla 104 solid stability, even at higher speeds and in demanding terrain. However, maneuverability is retained and the ski reacts quickly to changes in direction. This makes the ski easy to control even in narrow couloirs and steeper touring terrain.

Positive side effects, without any nasty calories: Valhalla skis not only support the personal experience of nature, but also ensure that nature can be experienced for a long time to come. As with all its models, Freddi attaches great importance to making the Valhalla 104 as environmentally friendly as possible and focusing on sustainability. The use of ecological materials and an environmentally friendly production method help to ensure that this ski is not only fun to ride, but also gives you a clear conscience.

Conclusion

Whisper-quiet and light as a feather - the Valhalla 104 is the perfect choice for passionate freeriders who not only want to enjoy their descents, but also longer ascents with climbing skins under their skis, without having to sacrifice the benefits of a stable and freeride-ready ski. The ski is characterized by clear and powerful reactions to changes in direction, but at the same time retains impressive maneuverability, which makes it particularly attractive for less experienced skiers.

The Valhalla 104 tended to convince me more as a touring ski than as a thoroughbred freeride ski, but that's how it's meant to be. The combination of stability, flotation in powder and general maneuverability makes it an excellent choice for anyone looking for freedom in the backcountry. With its particularly light weight and ecological approach, the Valhalla 104 is an investment for riders who are not only looking for high performance, but also a contribution to environmental protection and a regional approach. In my opinion, the ski is almost an all-rounder, which is characterized by its power saving on the ascent, its agility and liveliness on the descent, its good float in powder and its good performance on the slopes.

In the end, I like to come back to the culinary comparison, because like the Black Forest gateau, Valhalla skis are now closely associated with the Black Forest region, which is known for its traditional craftsmanship but also for its culinary specialties.

All in all, Freddi's skis are a charming expression of craftsmanship, tradition, versatility and regional ties. Just like a good slice of cake, they can offer an intense and satisfying experience, whether far from the slopes or over a cozy coffee in the umbrella bar after a wild ride through the ski area.
