PowderAlert 11 2024/25 | One last rodeo, cowboy!

Huge amounts of fresh snow, but unfortunately a little warm at the end of the season

04/15/2025 by Lars Oelmann
The life of a cowboy is dusty, hard and full of hardships, just like the freeride season 24/25. But just before Ullr sends the season into retirement, he calls us back to the powder rodeo.

The question is: are we still up for it, or are we already sitting in a rocking chair on the veranda with iced tea and enjoying our retirement? Are we back with a vengeance, or are we already thinking about summer, or at least glacier tours and firn excursions at 5 o'clock in the morning? The answer is up to you. The oracle will probably try again. It saddles up the camper van and rides out into the south-western Alps. Let's see if it finds powder or glop©. It will definitely be wild in the west!

Alert period and areas

With the coming südstau, there is snow everywhere in the southern Alps in the high mountains, but it will probably only be worth it in a small area in the southwest, Valais and central Switzerland.

Which brings us to the north, because in a small Swiss sweet spot, the precipitation should spread northwards, but the cold should also seep in from the northwest, so it could be quite nice there.

The alert lasts until Friday morning.

Wind

Foehn in the north, but not much wind in the Stau and in the areas where it spreads north over the main alpine ridge because the whole thing is a bit tied to a quasi front or pseudo countercurrent system, where cool air flows in from the northwest, while the stau comes from the southeast. Sounds complicated? It is, but it can also provide powder further up if the temperatures are right.

Snow line

Very difficult. In the true south and everywhere east of western Ticino, powder will only be possible above 2500m, as the snow line will always remain between 2000 and 2400m. In the east on the main Austrian ridge, it's more likely to be 2700m.

Colder air may arrive in the direction of Simplon, Goms, Gotthard and Upper Valais from Wednesday evening, so powder could also be expected from 1800-2000m. Full amounts but only higher up.

In the Bernese Oberland, northern Valais and north-central Switzerland it will snow deeper, but it's unclear how much will arrive from the south. Here, however, there is powder from 1500-1700m.

The amounts

East of Ticino in the southern high mountains will be around 30-50cm, the indicated core with up to 70cm towards Carinthia is not very likely with southeastern flow. So a downward surprise is possible here.

In the southwestern core from Ticino far into the Turin Alps, 100-150cm of fresh snow in the high alpine, the transition zone to the edge will be somewhere in Ticino and quite sharp. In the core of the core from the southern edge of the Gran Paradiso, over the Monte Rosa massif to the Simplon I see 150-200cm OR MORE. I wouldn't rule out 250cm in stau areas. However, I see snowpack increase in spring with such amounts at 100-120cm, i.e. 2/3 to half of the new snow, because it is warm and such amounts are settling easily.

It will be exciting in the Upper Valais, Goms and central Switzerland, where the precipitation meets the cold air. Here, 70-100cm and even further north 40-70cm can fall, although this is very uncertain and quasi nowcast (nowcast means: really look at the measuring stations and the radar of the night on Thursday morning to see how far north it goes).

Where should I go?

I wouldn't go straight into the stau in the south, because it's warm there. On Thursday, I would look towards the Upper Valais, Goms or central Switzerland to see if you can still find trees with a base or alpine meadows with visibility from 1800m, if it pushes even further north, then there too, because it's colder there.

On Friday it will be sunny and you can see what amounts are lying around in the high Alps.

Saturday it will probably still be sunny in the morning, but then the next disturbance may move in, which could probably keep us busy during Easter. It probably won't be huge amounts and not really cold though.

This is the last alert though. You're on your own then, dear Lone Powderrangers.

Mid-term

Summer break, because even if something comes again, the oracle will officially go into summer hibernation after this alert.

Powder to the People and see you next year!
